Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Newbie here

Engineer, came on board half a year ago. My second job. Seems already a tough and toxic environment. Is it worth it to stay for a while? Any advice from veterans?

Why? WHY DID YOU JOIN EXXON? Terrible terrible decision. Your career has been tarnished now. Get out of here NOW. I mean right now. The longer you stay the worse your CV will look. GET OUT NOW,

Stay long enough to figure out if your are marked as HiPo or if you have a sponsor.

If you are lucky enough to be labeled a HiPo, your career will be on autopilot without much effort besides kissing upward and reading PowerPoint slides claiming other people’s work as your own.

If you are not HiPo or sponsored, stay just long enough for your Resume not to look bad with a very short employment.

Hello OP, Run Away!

UNLESS, you are really smoking hot, wear tight dresses (w/o underwear) and bend over a lot to pick up things. Then please stay as window dressing, in order for us to continue retaining our really smart nerds.

Don’t walk run out of there as soon as you can. Don’t won’t to be there if there is an incident due to lack of people, lack of qualified people and the I don’t care anymore mentally drained employees.

Start looking for a new role, company is not what it used to be. It’s all about profit, fair enough, but they honestly don’t care about the employees

I can tell by the responses and the post this is by someone that wants instant gratification and a game controller.

Seriously don’t understand why you would post something like this here unless you’re trolling.

I want you to leave so somehow someway you don’t end up being my boss which is pretty easy and most of you aren’t the MIT grads you claim to be.

Please just move on.

@trl I’m pretty sure the government isn’t trying to shut down O&G, since they buy and use more of the stuff than anybody else. Lose the tinfoil hat bro.

The main danger to the industry is the bad business decisions made by incompetent leaders. You know, the ones you’re all on here complaining about 24/7/365.

@OP You won’t gain a lot of marketable or transferable engineering experience at Exxon.

The “engineering” work, such as it is, mostly entails modifying technical specifications for equipment purchases from third party vendors. If you’re lucky, you’ll run some boilerplate sizing calculations that any college sophomore could handle, but for some reason Exxon’s engineers think doing so makes them paragons of applied science.

You can stick around for a couple of years and collect a salary while you look for something else. There’s no future in O&G.

Stick around, until salary raise above inflation stops.

I would stay at least a full year or two, so that you don't look like a job hopper on your resume. But spend that time networking your butt off so that you can quickly find another position. This company has always been toxic & it's getting worse. Don't spend any more time here than you have to. It won't help your career, and it will ki-l your spirit.

Have you not gone through the PDS cycle yet. That in itself is enough to leave. It’s funny the US government wants to shut down O&G. They can’t due to all of the benefits it brings in a modern society. But the executives and processes of XOM may stop producing where the politicians never could.

It depends on where you are some sites are worse than others. I agree on leaving before too much time has passed.

No, I’d recommend you’d leave as soon as you can find a new job. This is a serious answer, I wish I had left before the pension impact
