Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

What else is left?

Some of us felt that Intel’s best hope to escape x86 prison involved successfully expanding into technologically-adjacent markets — either the GPU market or the mobile processor market. It seems that we’ve done multiple “try/fail/bail” loops in the former (rather than sticking with a long term commitment or, conversely, a final “get-out-of-the-money-pit” exit), and in the latter we turned down big opportunities (PSO and the iPhone) that have now come and gone. Meanwhile, we’ve lost leadership in the x86 space we invented.

So what else is left that would allow a turnaround?

Intel cannot recognize what is strategic and therefore must stick with it. Memory is not strategic and Intel gets in and out, in and out. Meanwhile, low power processors was/is strategic (disruption from below). Intel saw it early but, somehow didn't think it was strategic so it cut the effort. Now it is disrupting Intel from below and even getting into notebook computers and servers!. It is ironic that Intel failed to learn the key lesson from Andy Grove in his book, 'Only the Paranoid Survive'.

The phrase “their little chip” reeks of arrogance.

Their little chip is literally responsible for Intel’s downfall as it fueled the economy of scale of TSMC and enabled a technology platform for all fabless competitors including AMD.

@uge+1k82q5PQ Like the treatment we gave fruit company on x86 and they still went to ARMy, sure the same if we attempt to manufacture their little chip

Intel can always pivot to H1B immigration services as an industry leader.

Even if PSO has accepted the iPhone deal, you know Intel would have failed to execute and would have been dumped anyways.

It’s not in Intel’s DNA to do something different.

Drones? Consumer market products? Web hosting? Fab-as-a-Service before we’ve optimized and nailed down what we’re offering and how to compete against the alternatives?

There’s gotta be something out there with better prospects. Would love to hear ideas. Otherwise, the current set of layoffs are just the beginning.
