Pat’s natural leadership mode is to be a cheerleader. He prefers to run his mouth about a mythical future time when Intel has laid waste to all its enemies and stands triumphant over the semi biz. I think he was reluctant to consider layoffs until the financial reality became unavoidable.
He’s also enjoyed a fair amount of good press and goodwill among true believers within Intel, and that’s unlikely to survive a brutal layoff cycle.
