Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

Legal Operations- SCOs on chopping block?

Has anyone heard anything about Trial Attorneys, Sr Trial Attorneys, Counsel, Lead Counsel, Managing Lead Counsel....Staff Counsel Offices (SCOs), etc etc?

We were told that the entire company was on the block, but when you look at our operation as a cost saving effort, we save the company TONS of money in legal fees. I've heard that eliminating some smaller offices and having attorneys go remote is going to be the way to go. Maybe centralizing some scheduling efforts and eliminating admin and para positions? Does anyone know? Word has gotten out on the street about our changes, and opposing counsel have started talking about us amongst themselves. It could make resolving cases more difficult if they won't do it, or get off the pot.

Total conjecture, but like all of you I’ve been “armchair CEO’ing” for the past 2 months in an effort to understand all of this. It’s my understanding National General is a “high risk” carrier. Years ago Allstate made a hasty departure from that niche ostensibly because it was a fiscal nightmare. Outsiders are curious to know what is different now? Why get back into that game by taking on a ton of “skill challenged” drivers when it was so bad last time?

I think the shift in our litigation approach over the past few years holds the answer to that question. Maybe the new approach was in part an experiment to see if we could work some loss mitigation on the the litigation end of those high policy profits. If I’m correct then it would seem staff counsel will live to see many more courtroom battles. If I’m wrong then i just give up on guessing how this transformed Allstate is supposed to function profitably.

It’s been radio silent since June. I am suspicious that all of the remote training for nuance and zoom has been to prepare us for less administrative support in a permanent remote environment.

I would almost guarantee that the attorneys are safe. They save the company a fortune.
