It really is crummy to essentially tell employees “We’re going to devote hundreds of millions of dollars to severance for layoffs” and then let those employees stew over that for a few months. Seriously??? That’s like a partner saying “I think I might wanna break up with you…I’ll get back to you in a few months and let you know. Um kay?”
Aw HELLLLL no.
I’ve been wondering what motivates senior execs to think this is OK and the only thing that comes to mind is not a nice thought. They’ll all millionaires many times over. What do they truly care about how employees are impacted? Isn’t going to impact the six-figure remodeling of their vacation home in Sunriver or the renovation of their other “vacation cottage” in Europe.
Cynical I know. But I long ago stopped believing that anything other than extracting wealth from Nike was a top priority for senior management. That’s partly why Nike isn’t firing on all cylinders like it used to. Former generations of leadership were themselves true Nike believers and it showed in how the company was managed and how employees were treated. Marketplace results were an outcome of that effective leadership. Those people are long gone.
I don’t want to lose my job but I am seriously considering an exit either way. Just tired of…everything.
