Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

How Centene systematically targeted staff for layoff

This is addressed to the high performers. You know who you are. You have, through tenure and talent, achieved a higher salary grade than some of your co-workers. You have been a resource for other staff and at times have had to train your own manager. You know that they can hire new employees for less than they are paying you now as evidenced by the recent new hires to your team despite corporate knowing months ago that a layoff was coming. They began this targeted layoff of your position months ago

Sometime in the first quarter of this year you started getting write ups about your performance. It didn’t make any sense to you at the time , you’ve never been written up before. The write ups was ambiguous and subjective, lacking any basis or fact, but still, a write up, nonetheless. Then you received another one with similar ambiguous and non-specific examples

Then the layoff started and you informed that your position was “eliminated” and it all makes sense. You were being targeted over the last few months specifically for this layoff. They started a paper trail to show there was “Cause”. This way, you cannot sue for discrimination or wrongful termination, instead, they will say you were selected based on your performance.

If you think you’re going to receive that severance package, you are mistaken. They have already shown you who they are, so believe them. The fine print in the severance agreement stipulates that you must be available to work through December 8 provided you complete all your tasks as directed. That is their “get out of paying severance free clause.” They will overload you with work, give you impossible tasks and push you into the difficult position of either quitting out of a mental health crisis or firing you for “cause” thereby releasing themselves from paying you that very expensive severance package.

Well played Centene, well played.

Sometimes it’s not what you know, but who you know. Sometimes PL choose who they feel is not a fit for their ego.

Out of nowhere..or did the PL finally start enforcing basic policies. Or, did the OL change?

I mean, yes. It’s possible you were targeted. But I really don’t see the company wanting to deliberately target their most talented and hardworking associates. It just doesn’t make any sense.

Again it’s possible, but it seems more likely the PL changed or the expectations were increased and since you thought were a high performer, you assumed doing what youbalway did to get there would be enough.

The line between someone who considers themselves a high performer and a PL that agrees is often fuzzy.

Please seek help, you seem to be having a crisis, this is hard but YOU MATTER, and you need to talk to someone.

To @wta+1oVvlJUH “stop complaining” and @znf+1oVvlJUH “Labor Relations”

Let me tell you both something. I personally experienced what OP and others commenting went through. I was a top performing employee. Exceeded expectations, a ton of knowledge in multiple departments and trusted for over 10 YEARS… out of nowhere a few months ago all of a sudden my PL had a problem with every single little thing I did! EVERY THING! Sent work back to be reworked when there was nothing wrong with it. Shot down everything that others praised. Put down for everything!

Don’t you dare say stop complaining. And I don’t give a sh*t if you have over 100 years in labor relations!!! “it’s been a good run” Those PL made us look like we were failures when we were not. Do you know what that did to my mental health? Oh that’s right you think we should just “get over it” when there are people like myself who took a serious hit to our mental health. Literally to the point I was wishing I wouldn’t wake up the next morning because I was tired of being dragged through the mud and treated like I was worthless for 8 hours a day 5 days a week because I felt like my PL was trying to run me off and I FELT TARGETED. I reported it. Nothing was done.

This “anonymous forum” is public and lets others know they aren’t alone in what they experienced so back the fu-k off!!!

Yes. I Exceeded expectations in all measures on my last performance eval. The weirdness started a few months ago. And for the person who stated that I should self reflect on my attitude because it won’t help me find a job…I already found a different job with a different employer. I have a reputation for being a high performer. I don’t think the company owes me anything, but trying to gaslight me into quitting or to CYA was wrong.

Stop complaining. You had a good run. Brush off and carry on. Stop with the conspiracy BS. You have a job until December, you will receive severance (pretty generous seeing as over 50% of Americans who are laid off get 0-1wk warning and 0 severance). This attitude is not going to help you get a new job. The writing has been on the wall, these are not the first layoffs and they will not be the last, that unfortunately is business, does it feel good? No way! But its going to happen at times. Want a bit more security? You can try for a Union job but "buyer beware" they have issues too, including lack of reasonable strike pay when there is a mandatory work stoppage (this was just in the news). There are other companies and jobs out there, what you do from here is on you. And please, if you really feel there was illegal actions taken CALL AN ATTORNEY!!! They can help you, but posting on a anonymous forum is not going to create a lasting change.

Oh. My. Word. I was laid off in August and this is EXACTLY what happened to me. My last day is 3 days from now so hopefully the part about them withholding severance is incorrect but the rest is spot on!!!!

What's really eerie is that you actually believe in this conspiracy, and apparently have very little knowledge of how layoffs work or the reality of the regulations involved. But please let me assure you of one thing, there IS FEDERAL OVERSIGHT and the execs are aware of it. Before you are so sure that you were targeted maybe look at your performance from an outside view... Because your rant sounds pretty entitled to me, and I don't even work for this place. But I do have over 20 years in Labor Relations...

This is spot on. Former PL here. Chong and group have a love language of lying. Speak the truth and be labeled as negative and not a team player. Got out before they could lay me off but the writing was on the wall. Also keep in mind Chong's mandate of a bell curve for evaluations. Even if all poor performers have been removed, PLs are mandated to have a bell curve of evaluations. And know that the PLs are also subjugated to this by their leaders and on up the chain.

That is eerily, almost exactly, what happened to me. Went from a 5.0 eval (no promotion, mind you) to a 3.5 with two write ups this past year and now laid off. I'm not one for conspiracies but this hits really close to home.
