Thread regarding Occidental Petroleum Corp. layoffs

I don't blame the younger folks for leaving

A lot of people I know are angry at the younger generations for being quick to quit their jobs and leave for greener pastures but I can't find any fault in that. The time when a person was rewarded for making their career in one place is gone. The company will lay off even the most loyal employees without a second thought. So why would anybody want to stay anywhere for longer than necessary? The youth is smart. I wish more of us would learn a lesson from them.

@xmw+1eGWv0v9 Look out for number 1?? You are EXACTLY what's wrong with the industry and the world in general. Your generation screwed us all and now you're out here giving the same advice that has sh-t falling apart. Retire and take your cr---y advice with you.

Both my neighbor's kids graduated from Texas AM with Petroleum Engineering degrees in 2016 and 2017. Both were really smart kids and excelled in academics. One went to Apache and the other to a service company, and both were laid off. One went back and got a masters and now they are both working in environmental fields. The way things are going the young ones should go into something else and let the folks in their 30's and 40's finish out the fossil fuel era.

My question is why are all of these college kids at Tech, UT, A&M and OU still going into oil and gas fields? This is a dying and volatile industry that won’t be here for a full career for a 20 year old.

Look out for number one these days should be the golden rule. I have been in the industry 30 plus years and my advice for anyone is look after themselves first. If young or old you need to be careful how much you jump around for the resume, but if you leave on good terms good for you exploring the market and doing better for yourself.

There are extremes. A professional who leaves the first time they are stressed or don’t get their way are no good to any employer. These people normally shake out when they have too many employers in the first 5-10 years of their career with no real progress.
