Why is there ALWAYS one person trying to join a call as video? Narcissist or attention h0? No one wants to see you or the people walking around behind you. Just stop already!! Covid is over and I didn’t want to look at you then.

let's add that anyone hired solely as a DEI enforcer should be fired immediately because there is absolutely no need for this kind of paid position in a corporate environment.
I comply. I pull my blinds completely shut and point my webcam so far high up that basically only a dark shadow can be seen on screen in front of the trendy Teams background effect. Maybe this is an accurate reflection of what WF has done to my soul.

Since we do not have an engaging workplace, a healthy culture and real opportunities to grow professionally, we are hyper sensitive to anything that suggests otherwise.
Video chat is not a replacement at work for making a personal connection with someone in real life. It is uncomfortable for both sides, most of us sit there frozen, not contributing in any meaningful way.
That one person I work with turning on the camera is all about appearances (pun intended) with no substance.
This has nothing to do with being older or younger and how quickly we can adopt technologies. It's a matter of purpose, solving a problem, using the right tools for the situation at hand.
WF, give me that purpose and I will dance on camera all f'n day.
Don’t think all calls require sharing your face, but criticizing someone for sharing their face on zoom is really weak stuff.
It's subjective. If it makes you happy, go for it. I have no interest in "connection" with coworkers. My body language will probably say "this is stupid". To each their own.
I've never shown my face on camera in 3 years.
@ggj I wonder if this is the same manager who worked in a group of mine who would insist everyone needed to be cameras on, even to the people who didn’t report to her. Of course every time she was on she was freshly botoxed and blowed out unlike the rest of us who actually worked for a living.
@kvy If 1,000 people can complain about RTO, SVB and his coffee drinking and our Indian exec P ing on people, I think OP can talk about zoom calls. It’s pretty clear this is not solely used as a layoff report site.

We have an executive who requires all people of a certain employee level to be on screen, otherwise this person will target your performance reviews. (And she has… with a series of minor claims)
She can do that, so I comply. It’s annoying. But she said this is necessary otherwise it “dates us” if we insist on being off screen. If we are innovative and viable (aka younger) then we will always turn on our video cameras. 😐
Funny thing, I know POC who don’t use video or upload photos to TW because they felt they were treated differently once people knew they didn’t fit their expected “image.” Same thing goes with people who are overweight. People can legally discriminate against obese people since it’s not a protected class. Requiring people to be on screen invites bias. My take, if you have to “see” someone to do the work, that’s on you and you are likely using some form of conscious or unconscious bias.
I like video and it has nothing to do with my desire to look at my face. It’s so I can read body language and feel a better connection. None of the people I work with live in my city, so it helps me feel more connected. I only do this in smaller meetings. For the big ones, I go off camera.

Right! I can handle a frustrating person on the phone but I can’t look at them on the screen, i have to cover their face with another window. 😂

Did you see the story of Miss VA on a zoom call and she could see all the men commenting on her but they didn't know? She is in a corporate role now and was just trying to work. Us girls are not working on zoom so you can check us out!
Yes, it's a waste of time. I don't care what people or their background look like, and I don't need others looking to discriminate or make "cute" comments about my appearance or background. Waste of bandwidth.

I would happily send them links to dating sites in lieu of this BS! I’ve had managers pressuring us to join via video. So ridiculous.
They think it provides greater 'face time' than using a static photo. They think it will somehow help their career.
Or, they're looking for a date.
