How much do you believe ranking outcome is based on role? What about if your project is cancelled due to no fault of your own? Seems projects that go are rewarded even if reason a project stops is host government, bad rocks, etc.

Luck matters in EM. There are always some managers that no one wants to associate to. Lower level employees enjoy gossiping about them. It is so funny that these managers, think that could be someone else! I am lucky not to have reported to such managers before, have seen poor girls and boys suffered under them.
it’s even more egregious when “hi potentials” are quickly cycled out of high stress roles, while technically superior folks are left in them until they burnout or are PIPd
I'm going to get downvoted to heck for this, but some roles (if done well) deserve higher rankings.
Have you ever heard of all the folks that only want to be in projects and refuse MAL, TCE roles because they are "too much work or high stress" and they want a "job with more work life balance"? Or folks that refuse to go to refineries from head office because "they run so lean it's a high stress environment"? Yeah, I know lots of those folks. If you aren't willing to take high stress roles.. well, in my opinion, you aren't willing to have higher rankings than others.
People who are deemed to move forward are given the projects who are deemed to move forward. If your project gets cancelled it means you were not blessed to begin with. HiPos are protected from luck.
Luck and decisions made at a much higher level than any of us. Some projects are doomed from the beginning due to how they were negotiated with the host governments.
It’s not just an EM problem, we refuse to conceive that luck is an important part of any outcome.
If you take all the credit in a meritocracy, you’ll have to take the fall as well.
