Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Contract negotiations

We should follow suit with UAW. Look at the sweet contract they got. Just about everything they wanted. Employees still only pay 3% insurance premium. Removed $12k cap on yearly profit sharing. Ratification bonus of $12k, lump
Sum back pay, yearly raises. Temp workers path to permanent. And here we are begging for 2% a year with constant threat of furlough.

@2vat- I agree that this type of union work breeds laziness. Not all union work is this way. Do away with seniority rosters and it will get better. At a construction local everybody pulls their weight or you get run off. The good employees don’t have to worry about being furloughed. If someone starts tattle telling they get taken out back and beat down. They don’t play. It’s a true brotherhood where they protect each other.

There’s no consequences for poor work ethic, there’s no reward for good work ethic. Which equals no motivation.
This is what the unions support. Union committee members “whoops” that’s an old title I was told, are calling in weeks of vacation the day layoffs take place and no other representative of the union even reaches out to the affected employees.
UP is a greedy company that cares nothing about its employees or their families as well, but the union is the biggest group of hippocrits, back stabbing, job k–ling organizations in any industry. Look for the closed sign and I can assure you it was a union driven workforce.
Unions k–l jobs!!! Lots of people I work with are great hard working individuals away from the job, but once on the clock their the laziest, Back, stabbing , cry baby, unproductive, people I have ever been around my entire life. If you want a more secure work place, get rid of the corrupt union!!!!! Allow leaders to be leaders. A hire date does not qualify you to be a leader! Wake up and make decisions for yourselves as real men and women used to!

Because the UP and railroad unions are weak. Easy question

UAW workers may have gotten a good deal, but their days are numbered. Regardless of whether or not we go electric, the hay day of car production is coming to an end. With everyone attacking fossil fuels, nobody allowing nuclear energy, dams being torn down to save the skimming water gnat, horrendous traffic on beyond capacity roads, crumbling bridges, and people leasing cars because they can’t afford purchase payments, the current auto industry is potentially doomed. They better enjoy their pay and benefits while they last.

@1bli: What great and wonderful things have the railroad unions accomplished for their members at UP? Skim this site for agreement employees saying anything positive about their unions and then get back to me. Last time I checked, UP was the worst place to work in the United States, with 80% of employees hating their jobs and 90% hating their CEO (for good reason). So much for unions improving working conditions and holding management accountable.

No, I don't work for UP anymore, because unlike many of the people still working there I had options, and when the time was right I used them.

I'm here for the same reason as everyone else is: enterainment.

@ QNN. Lets welcome Lance Fritz to the discussion, sounds like he is upset with the topic. Well QNN be upset before you came to Union Pacific why choose our company why not go screw up another company. I hope the stocks fall, and banks go belly up so you fools at the top fill the pain. All this education but no common sense. Lastly don't inform me on education and schools and trades because I have 2 boys in boarding schools, not private boarding schools and the cost for it is more than your salary so don't tell me about this silly bull c-ap yall are pulling

UP has always had weak unions.
Labor relations owns the unions and
the Unions don't owe you a damn thing.

StUPid

Unions are an obsolete idea. Many of the jobs unions are protecting across different industries are redundant, and unions routinely work to block or r—d innovation in their industries, especially those that relate to automation. UP is no exception.

Nobody is entitled to anything under any circumstances. If your job becomes redundant, do what everyone who isn't a member of a union (most of the American workforce) does: go to a college or vocational school, learn new skills, raise your value and compete in the national labor market.

With the decline of large industrial companies and the rise of tech-driven contract based gig work the union model will become all but extinct in the near future.

Degreed professionals (who aren't unionized) currently enjoy some of the best working conditions in industrial history, with generous vacation packages, bonuses, flex time off, work from home arrangements, and affordable health plans. I and millions of others get all of this and more without a union.

Be careful what you wish for. You can be terminated for it and the company can hire/rehire who they want or just contract the work you chose to walk away from.

I'm not a union member but have always found it humorous how people throw out the " congress will order you back to work" line management and union members give. As a scare tactic and by those who are scared.
A union is a group of workers fighting and protecting jobs, benefits and coworkers. When members say the union doesn't fight for me. Therein lies the problem. You are apart of the union and it isn't about you. The statement should say our union needs better leaders at the local levels so our voice is heard at the top.
If UPs union members went on strike and ignored congress for even a day, you would see that your union ( the members) are stronger than GMs. Once again, it's about the overall benefit of the collective group.

If any railroad union goes out on strike the congress will put them back to work in hours..Ive seen it happen..The companies know this and use it against us...

If everyone that feels like they have been let down, neglected, sold out, denied their rights to exercise their seniority to hold a position by their so called "union" would all of the sudden become an "objector" to belong in the so called "union", if it would get the unions attention. In other words "take the unions funding away" if they won't represent us!

Yeah that'll never happen. The class 1's are bound by different rules. Being a union member used to mean something. The RR union's are a joke. You pay dues, they collect millions, and where are they when we need them? Why are we paying these dues, when they do nothing but fold on the negotiations? The UAW used to be the best union, until they got busted for corruption. The UAW members had a right to strike. I commend them for sticking it out. They didn't get the best deal, but they got a lot of what they wanted. What I'd like to see is an internal investigation of the FRA and the RR unions. The RR unions need to be investigated at the very least. The union members have a right to know where their money went and what it was used for. That's just my opinion anyways

OP: GM also secured multiple uncontested plant closures as part of the deal. Read the fine print. GM got almost everything they wanted and then some.

Well to be fair, it's the only thing that will put the issue on the radar of the public.

Get the public involved on the safety angle and that will bring the politicians to our side.

Yea...UP can out spend us, but they can't out vote us...

Yea thats a union for you. I remember a young man called himself a union guy, stated he was born for this. He was laid off, now he is a mgr at a car wash. All that blabbing, and look what the union did for him.
