This Christmas season if they are not careful. Consumers may not want to buy them because they might think that the company is having problems. The cards could be tough to redeem.

if you want to give gift cards the best bet is generic ones that aren't connected to a specific store like master card or something that way someone will take it even if some don't. but for small amounts of money $10 $20 dollars just do what grandpa did and put the money in the card.
Absolutely do not buy them. Beside the question of who would want them is what would be their “shelf life”.
A chain store (Shopko) went under here very quickly in the spring just after Christmas and a lot of people lost money from the gift cards just purchased a few months before.
The eventual collapse of Sears could happen quickly. I was a store manager of a Sears Essential experiment store and we were actually doing very well and then they decided not to continue it after spending millions on the concept and they literally pulled the plug on us overnight. It could happen that quickly when the whole thing goes under and it certainly will.

Ooo a Kmart gift card, for the 10 stores they have left..what a perfect gift. I don't think anyone except maybe your 80 year old grandma would even think about buying a gift card to either store.
Getting a Sears or Kmart gift card for Christmas would be the same as getting a lump of coal. If someone gifts you with either of these cards, you'll know where you rate on their list!
Why would anyone want to take that risk unless the value added is upgraded to cover the risk. Let me see, Walmart, Target, Kohls, Costco, BJs, Nordstroms, JC Penney, etc. the options are unlimited without the risk
