Thread regarding Xerox Corp. layoffs

It's not all bad

We all know the problems in XDX with reductions and pending job transfers to Raleigh, and all the issues with the transfer of jobs to HCL in GIS/XBS.

There is what seems to be a bubble of hope in Webster engineering. There is a lot of work, a number of job openings, and work that appears to have a sustainable path for at least a few years. There have been no measurable reductions in many years, and I don't believe there will be for at least a couple more.

Of course the lack of pay raises and this questionable employee incentive plan "bonus" don't help morale, and our benefit cost for things like health insurance go up every year, resulting in a net decrease in cash flow. With everything happening in XDX/GIS/XBS it does make people everwhere skittish about the future, even if they are safe for the next few years.

For anybody in engineering I wouldn't rush out to find a new job as the sky isn't falling, at least not in the short term. If you are unhappy with pay and benefits, take your time to find a perfect job instead of jumping ship at the first opportunity you get.

All bets are off though if there is some sort of merger or buyout from HP. I don't know if the recent HP layoff announcement is making way for a buyout, or if HP is just doing what Xerox has been doing.

No matter where you are, good luck. Take care of yourself first, as Xerox won't. But don't rush to grab the first position you find, unless you truly are at risk or hate your job.

Toner is safe until we sell it off. product engineering is safe until it’s outsourced. iGen manufacture is safe until it’s discontinued. If you have a giant ego and executives don’t understand your function you will ironically be safe. Everyone else is at risk. That includes field services and all backend support. MDS survival depends on market saturation and trends toward commodity.

I see no evidence mgmt intends to modify the model used already for Finance, XBS, XIM, going forward. Plan accordingly.

About no raises in a decade-
I have become pretty good friends with a person on the support teams in Canada and
I have been told that they not only stopped any raises of any kind for 8 years but at one point several years ago their pay was reduced by ten percent for about a year.
So there are some wild stories about how Xerox has had history of really, really horrible treatment of their employees.
And like many places, having a job at 90% pay is better than no job at all.
That’s why people stayed at the time

I don’t want to be the evil harbinger BUT, Webster Engineering is not in as good a place as you hope.
I work every day with Engineering
I know a lot on first name basis
I do think you are safer than most because of the complications of the job and you do it well.
The key is what you can actually control and who determines your future
Do not kid yourself into thinking your skills will save you
India has many, many smart Engineers too.
You are as safe as the next street result of the stock or what Mary feels like that day.
Trust me, I do not wish Ill on anyone.
My point is pure and simple:
Nobody is safer than the desired stock value.
I did not say profit of any kind because we are way past that.
You are as safe as a TARGET share value
Nobody is safe right now and common sense of the requirements of the right people to keep the company healthy have long since been abandoned. Every team on here has a story of “ who is going to keep this working?”
In all honesty, I have no idea how it’s even running at all by this point and I know it’s going to get even worse.
Xerox is doomed
It just is and I don’t think it’s salvageable in its whole form any longer.
Too much of the inner workings and functions have been removed or damaged to fully recover.
These three new “people” running the ship have removed everything vital from the inside and that leaves just a shell to die

A message to the original poster. Your viewpoint is VALID. Only you walk in your shoes and know why you are still at Xerox!

To those who responded negatively: you are losers. You have blindly without walking in this posters shoes criticized them. You do not know geographically where this poster lives. You do not know if their skills are current. You do not know if the market they live in is saturated with those skills. You do not know if the mental challenge of what they are doing keeps them at Xerox (trust me an engineer at Xerox gets challenges not seen at a lot of companies and we get lots of energy in solving those challenges). You do not know if personal:family keep them here. To criticize without being informed is ignorant.

I would never count on HP buying Xerox. And if they do, expect massive layoffs unless you have a skill unavailable anywhere else. At best it might buy you 3 months. Trust me. This is how it works. Any job that can be taken over by a current HP employee will move to them, not you. The first thing they will focus on is eliminating as many Xerox employees as possible (redundancies.)

And to be fair, this is understandable. HP is the purchasing company and has the right to keep it's current employees ... employed. They want the tech, not the people.

1qus - a decade of no raises? My organization has had raises. Not every year, and not as much as I'd like, but it hasn't been completely stagnant. I do agree with c-appy healthcare, that has gotten worse every year, and while it has gone down at most other companies, Xerox is doing worse than many. Since you think skills are not transferable, I am assuming yours are not. Mine are.

@roe Go, React, Angular (Javascript in general), Python, F#, C# are all good choices depending on what you want to do. GNU/C is a solid language and the only choice for some things but the job market for that keeps getting smaller. If you don't have a EE or CE background you should be doing something else.

@qhb, - Really? Then why are you still at Xerox after a decade of no raises + c-appy health + imploding pension + toxic environment? Oh that's right, you'll be taking a huge pay cut anywhere you go with your non-transferable skill-set.

To the GNU/C person - it's obvious you don't have a clue. Most software people do keep their skills up, and work in multiple technologies. There are a LOT of opportunities in Monroe county doing C, if that's what you desire, or web, or embedded. It's a great time to be an engineer, especially a software engineer as opportunities are numerous locally, nationally, or even staying locally and working remote.

Personally, I know for certain if I lost my job I could find another job within a week. I could find a great job in two. I have a large network and know this to be the case, and I have kept my skills up to date and can work in many different areas.

I do recognize as a previous posted said that XBS is going down, and will have a negative impact to all of us. I hope that is recognized by senior management before it's too late, but it will only be corrected if it impacts them directly.

To OP - glimmer of hope is good.
To Duh - why don’t you specify what you think a modern development suite includes - as if that is relevant. Are you suggesting Go, React, Angular, what? We’ve heard you go off on Java and now C. The thread was about engineering, not software dev but let’s hear suggestions rather than railing against specific tech.

Are you trying to rationalize not keeping your skills current? Lots of perfect jobs in Monroe county doing GNU/C programming eh? When they finally let you go you'll deserve exactly what you're going to get.
