Thread regarding Lowe's Cos. layoffs

Finally

We are so over all of this. Our entire lunch today was spent discussing a union, this entire crew is for it and after putting feelers out on the floor we haven't found anyone against it yet. Hopped online and filled out the information so now we wait for a representative to contact us and we move forward.

I have been working at Lowes for a while. Ive never been written up, Ive never called off, Im as dependable as they get. For the first time in my career, I am strongly thinking about a union. Its that bad.

The part in the video about scaring people that they won’t be able to talk to their managers directly is the funniest part. We can’t do that now! Because first you have to find them, then you actually have to get them to listen to you which they won’t, and then that actually have to do something which they have a track record of not doing. And really it’s the corporate management that’s the problem not necessarily the store management. They are the ones ultimately responsible for this mess. Irresponsible puppets.

I know that video makes unions seem scary, but really, how much more can we lose? Lowes keeps taking things away, raising our insurance costs, making us work 6 days in a row, wont guarantee hours, more people have gotten injured than ever in the history of my store, so seriously, Id pay someone, in this case a union, to get my rights back. Or at least prevent Lowes from making things any worse. Also to send a message to other retailers that they cant get away with this abuse and disrespect.

Id love to see Lowes try to shut down my store. We are the most profitable in the area. Closing even one day would be devastating for them. And since I and everybody I work with lives in constant fear that we’re gonna lose our job any day now, or worse, lose our life in the unsafe conditions, if having a union reduces that stress, then I’m all for it.

Why are you downvoting me, I'm right. I'm not saying it's good that stores close because of unionizing, but it's a fact that it happens. If I'm wrong tell me why.

You are right! People think it’s a scare tactic but you only need to do a little research to find examples of retailers doing exactly what you mentioned - closing stores that attempt to unionize. If the posters think they will be successful with their strategy, more power to them. Like I said, I’d like to see how it all plays out.

It's not a scare tactic.

That’s right folks, remember your FOE - facts, opinions, and examples, this is what Lowe’s management can do. And the TIPS- Threats, intimidation, promise, and surveillance. Notify you local union rep if anyone is doing TIPS.

All this talk about shutting down a store is scare tactics. Lowe’s relies on the employees not knowing their rights to a fair representation. A company is not going to close a profitable store because of a union. Know this - It is illegal for your employer to threaten or spy on you. If your talking to a union rep let them know if this is happening. There are serious consequences for Lowe’s doing this. Also, even a small group of employees can unionize. It doesn’t have to be the entire store.

Let them close it. Don't just look in your store, reach out to others in your area. Make it a big enough problem that they can't hide it.

You won’t just get fired, everyone in the store will probably get fired. Even those who have nothing to do with the idea. They will close your store, clean house, bring other nearby store employees to run your store and have a hiring event. It will never ever happen. Find a new job if you hate Lowe’s, just don’t get innocent people fired for nothing.

So what, let them shut it down! Then shut down the next one and so on. After all, it's only a lousy retail job. They can't shut them all down can they, maybe then Marvelous and his stock holder handler's will get the message. They can't continue to walk all over people and use them as pawn's as they see fit, and get away with it without paying a price. This is America not China!

The standard retail response is shutttering the affected store. You need to make this too painful an option for them to pursue. So what you need are other stores, preferably ones close to you, to follow the same path you're on and take all the same steps at the same time. They can close one store and eat the costs, but 2 or 3 or more? At that point it's much easier to let them stay than lose that much market share.

Also stay in touch with the media. If you make your intentions known widely then an retribution will be seen for what it is instead of the BS excuses they'll be putting forth.

Few retailers are unionized because in backwards US and A unions must be per company not per sector.

Imagine if you wanted to make a campaign to create a public option in healthcare and the only way to pass it was to get every city council in the country to vote on it.

“LOL....go ahead and try it. Lowe’s legal/hr depts will air drop a whole team into that store to snuff it out. And even if—and that’s a big IF—the store somehow did unionize, the company would just shut it down. Why do you think so few retailers are unionized to begin with?”

This! As for the PR of it all, as another poster mentioned, the spin will be that the store is closing for “renovations”. All of the employed will get terminated and the press release will say something to the effect of “We invite all to reapply for any open positions in the surrounding area and/or when this location reopens” all the while Corporate will have a list of the employees and will be sure to blackball them.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t go forward with it, but give it careful consideration. I actually want to see how it will all play out. Good luck!

It would be beautiful if they try and close the store or fire everyone...the news loves that stuff. All they could accomplish is the creation of a PR nightmare.

theyd sooner close your store or "close for renovations" while they fire all of you before that happens. not to mention there goes part of your income to union dues and having a union boss get rich off your backs.

ironically once a year you get 1 vote for every share you have at their meetings...but if you dont designate a voice or go yourself then the lowes board gets to vote for you....that means you literally give your power over to lowes to vote on things that harm you as an employee!!!

go to the damn yearly meeting or organize to send a representative that can use the employee block of shares to vote out board members, vote down their initiatives etc.

If it actually heads in the direction of unionizing, corporate will make moves to close your store soon thereafter.
