Thread regarding Lowe's Cos. layoffs

Untrained employees

I have found that there are more people that make eye contact with customers now than when I worked at Lowes a year ago.

But if that employee has no clue about drywall, doors, hardware or pretty much anything - then why are they there?

The top 3 answers when you ask where something is:

  1. I really don't know or that's not my department
  2. Get directions which are at the opposite end of the store- giving them time to run the other way.
  3. Let me get someone for you that can help - of which no one shows up.

I've tried to continue to do business at Lowes since I left, for no other reason than to give sales to former friends and co-workers , but after another waste of time today - I'll be going to HD

At WM,MD they got rid of the department manager position made them reapply and then rehired them at $8000 less per year. Then they dropped the full time hours to 32 per week dropping the salary another $3000 per year.

So why are the loser people who fit this profile still working for Lowes. Are you so unskilled and unhirable that you continue to bend over and take it up the arse. When over the course of two years your salary drops below $33,000 and you still have a family - why are you not out looking for another job?

Please stop complaining about upper management when you are being used as a snitch for the hierarchy. Get a life marty.

Did Lowes layoff people who worked at their stores with more than 14+years of experience?

I have no clue what you are trying to say. Marv is bad, top down is bad, but somehow also flatter hierarchy like socialism... Also bad? Is this a post too enlightenedly centrist for me to understand?

I’m a DS/SSM/Whatever my SM wants at the time. We went over our BEST/EOS scores in our meeting on Monday and I’m absolutely floored cause they went up 2 points!!! My jaw hit the table when he said it, now to be fair we are still below the company average but we went up from last year! I would like to know how this is possible, my store has never been so understaffed, has never been filled with more clueless people. As Someone in a management role I have never seen so many complaints, so many issues, so many problems with just one company it amazes me that we can do anything. I actually scratch my head sometimes and wonder how my store is able to stay open and turn a profit with how screwed up everything is. Myself as well as my fellow supervisors and ASMs run around the store like chickens with our heads cut off. We have about 10 full timers that actually will help us out the rest are part-timers that either dont show up or hide in the break room or in their department. When asked at the meeting by my store manager what my nightly game plan is when I work I told him it is mainly just circling the racetrack trying to keep people off their phones and on task. I cannot tell you the last time the closing ASMs and supervisors left on time. The employees are absolutely miserable. There must be something with the numbers or the fact that you basically only rate your direct supervisor, but I am completely appalled at this, The only thing I can think of is either that the employees lied because they feel they’re being tracked, or corporate fudge the numbers but the fact that we actually improved over last year is an absolute joke just like the rest of Lowe’s

It is all about DIM socialist mantra. Let’s attack the the poster. Typical Derangement Syndrome. Marv is not a team player. Marv’s Action speaks louder than his lame words. He is a lousy politician. Self-entitlement equals self-enrichment at his club at the top. At the bottom, useful id–ts for those that remain. Time has come to let go of Lowe’s. The greatest economy is now. Don’t wait. Misery loves company!

While I was never a fan of Nibblock I don't think one can even remotely compare the wholesale destruction of jobs that is happening under this current Lowe's administration. If I have the numbers correct: 99 Orchard Supply stores, 51 Lowe's/Rona in US + Canada (with even more to come), and an untold number in corporate and store level positions eliminated. All this is being done for the sake of the investors to try to convince them there is more untapped value to invest in Lowe's vs Home Depot. Our CEO has outright said it in his podcasts.

Does anyone think he/they are done yet? Don't think it is a coincidence we have yet to be told the results of the last employee survey and that corporate now sees a need to hire a Chief Brand and Marketing Officer. Company moral is at an all time low and there appears to be a total lack of empathy coming from the top. Think we will continue to see a shift to third-party and part-time employees at the expense of the experienced full-time employees. Perhaps Lowe's long term interests would be better served by improving store - distribution - internet - delivery - software efficiency and actual sales volume instead of repeatedly trying to cut ourselves to profitability. That method didn't work out so well for Sears Holding Company. To beat the competition you need to be better than them (not just emulate them), otherwise your little company mission statements are nothing but hollow meaningless words. The consumer is not that stupid nor are your employees.

Marvin did not destroy the ability to build a career at Lowes. That was Nibblock. Marvin just continues the trend.

Lowe’s is no longer a place where you can build a career; Marvin destroyed all that. It’s now a place where you get in, pickup some skills and leave.

This is the kind if thing that happens when min wage goes up. In NYC it's 15 an hour. So if 15 an hour gets you no experience, the experienced workers want more, but Lowe's doesn't give it so they leave. So, the pay for all workers levels out, but the overall quality does too.

It use to be simple. The PT CSA was for after school jobs and paid low wages but expectations were low. They were there to help the more experienced and better paid workers. Then the more experienced workers could move up to team leader, dept manager and beyond and by then the PT worker gained experience and can move up. There was a cycle of experience and mobility. Now, there is zero transition CSA and manager and no one with experience sticks around.

You say you used to work at Lowe’s, so, Mr. Know it All,why are you needing help from associates? Don’t you know anything yourself?

In my store a customer came to me, a old person, to tell me went to tool world for a Dewalt drill.

New young part-timer asked him if he had a picture of a drill

He didn’t have a clue what a drill was!!

He left disgusted

I tried to walk him back to tools but he refused

When it comes to either Lowe's or Home Depot, it's "same day, different vest".

You're going to get the same uneducated DIY store employees both places.

As a newer PT employee who knows their orig dept (OSLG) and has learned related ISLG & OPE, I don't know how I should be expected to know the ENTIRE Store for departments that don't staff after 6pm> close. The Zebra phone at least helps me a bit and I DO try to help every customer the approaches me re: other dept's. We are SO understaffed at our store it's ridiculous. Even the ASM takes his vest off when he needs to get something done that requires walking around the store. Customers will walk all over looking for a Red Vest in search of some help. Some departments even when staffed till close stay hidden in their dept, won't even pick up their returns or help with Code 50's 75's etc-Anything to not be seen by customers. I think they have a back door to their lockers & restrooms.

Most of our store's new hires know NOTHING about home improvement. They float around with a Zebra phone trying to find the location of items for customers. Welcome to the "new" Lowe's. The experienced full-time associates are leaving in droves before corporate has a chance to force them out. Past year and a half: Human Resources, Loss Prevention, Product Specialist Interior, Box-truck delivery crews, Assembly and Facilities personnel all eliminated. Installed Sales office, Product Specialist Exterior, RTM and department specialists expecting to be eliminated next. No job security at Lowe's anymore.
