Agreed. I have noticed Quic LA is a very good example with mostly dumb directors, who have been preventing good folks from getting the deserved promotion and promoting failures all the way to the VP level...

Qorruptcom is not a smart place to work. So naturally they promote the dumbasses and suckups because if the smart employees gained control all the managers would get fired.

If an engineer lacks the skills to move beyond a particular title for a long period of time, then the best thing for the company to do may be to roll the dice on a new engineer. The lower the title the more likely. Looking at the value to the company is to hard. As a result, the company looks at the title.

1jay: I have noticed this too. The best engineers in my group--who incidentally the oldest people and probably the most highly paid engineers were RIF-ed in November. Financially this may make sense in the short run; but in an industry that depends on innovation to survive, it's suicide! On the other hand, the director, the project lead and most of the managers for my group are total jerktards!

@dkt. It is not lack of people skills that has prevented these hard working well deserving of promotions folks from getting ahead. If anything it is lack of "sucking up" skills, lack of being capable of doing unethical stuff and hence not blending into the system that has prevented them from getting recognizance.

Don't kid yourself! Almost all promotions that occurred in the last 6-7 years are mostly due to upper management's unethical ways of promoting buddies and more than anything preventing good engineers from getting their rightful promotion. Look at the whopping number of promotions to directors and these directors don't even have any management skills.

So if you think getting ahead at Q is attributed to having people skills, Think again! It is mostly having "bad and undesired" skills, like being unethical, lacking integrity, lacking courage to challenge system that is obviously on the wrong, is what is getting you"ahead" at Q, when in reality holding you back from industry perspective. Getting ahead at Q is not really something to be proud of!

It's not just at the q. It is everywhere. Why do you think some of you nerds and geeks who lack any people skills never get promoted for like 20+years. And sadly, because you lack people skills, chances are you can't do anything else but being a low level grunt bit flipper for the rest of your life. Enjoy.
