Please. "Cringely predicted layoffs" is like saying that someone predicted that it might snow sometime during this winter in New York.
IBM has been laying off consistently every year since the 1990s. It's really not a great feat to predict they'll do so again. In fact, I'll come out and predict layoffs for February 2017 right now.
What he TRIED to predict was a massive, sudden global 26% cut in a month's time last year, stating that by February 28, 2015 that many worldwide IBMers were going to get walking papers. It didn't happen. Yes, people got laid off, as they always do this time of year, but not in nearly the numbers or nearly in the short span of time he said.

@1kjo - I would not call him that - he's predicted layoffs before, and when it comes to IBM and HP on the enterprise services side, both companies publicly stated that cuts will be massive and will take many years to play out - so, fasten your seat-belt for about a decade or so
I think there is a general consensus that this is going to be one of the worst years on record - the whole management strategy is to 'divest' - so, many businesses will be spun off or closing - we are yet to learn what IBM groups will be closed or laid off but I'd say that Cringely may be accurate (this time)...
IBM Malaysia just laid off over 70 people from the Lenovo ANZ support team last week.
They stopped receiving calls on Wednesday and everybody was given 2 months notice on friday.
