Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

In Scope 1's

I've heard of a few people that were ranked a 1 for last year yet they were notified that they are in scope... Doesn't that seem like an oxymoron? With a 1 ranking, shouldn't these individuals have a positive attitude going into the ESP? Or should they still worry?

Last fall I was a 2+ and labeled a hi pot. They can and will let you go. In the PDC last spring, you got the job if you had previously done it before. This seemed to be the trend too in the fall. If you have previously done the same job, apply for the position. Choose wisely.

I am at CO and cannot get better than a 2 rating no matter what I do. I guess the writing is on the wall. I probably should seriously start looking for a job. If they are willing to let people go to save $10,000 or $20,000 a year with someone who may earn less there is nothing I can do about that. They are the ones making the bet that the less experienced, lower paid person can do what I do. If they make a mistake and junk a well, that 10 or 20 grand will have been a bad bet.

Thank you 2-pzl, no where near close. Besides when you are staring down the rest of your life, who is to say how much is enough money at retirement? No one, let me repeat, no one wants to lose a job before they are ready, I don't care how many years experience you have. Good luck to everyone reading this silly site.

Hey 1yka: you aren't even close to the pension estimate. No way it's even half what you estimate. You are clueless. I have 40 years at higher PG and am way less that half your estimate. Go troll somewhere else.

30 year plus people shut the fu(% up. You have several million in pensions. Get over it go live your life........ Would you rather pad your bank account or have someone with 10-15 years raising there family have a job. Come the hell on. Also you make twice that of someone half your age. Don't get me wrong I hate it that anyone has to lose a job but if you are a contractor or a 30+ year person I don't feel that sorry for you as you should have saved some instead of buying that boat, hunting camp, Harley, corvette, BMW, lake house and F250 jack up diesel. Don't get me wrong I want that stuff too but when I buy it I will not do it on credit. Go cry somewhere else.

I meant to say March 8 job posting opportunities. Not April 8. However I do not hold out very much belief that he will get a position somewhere. Its just how things are right now.

My husband has 30 years plus with Chevron.

He was ranked 2 this time. He is a returning expat and is in scope. Starting April 8 he can apply for up to 4 positions elsewhere if he chooses. Although I do not believe he will receive another position. We can still stay positive and hopeful and I firmly believe all will be well no matter what. He can find another job doing something else or take some time to see if he may be called back later. Ether way all will be well.

@1mxy - Great posts and advice. It's an ugly cycle that I've seen a couple of times through the years. Live within your means, save until it hurts.

The message for the CVX younglings is CVX will return the same actions in the future and screw you in future ROM's. Observe and learn. Save your money and live under your paycheck. You will be much happier in 20 years if you learn from this experience...

CVX is targeting the higher paid older workers for lay off and betting the farm on the younglings to step up and excel at the workload. The thing is the younger workers can only succeed with the help of the older mentors. If CVX ever rebounds from their long list of failed projects, they will need to hire back the silver back gorillas to get the place in shape. Long live the grey beards!!!

Come one man. With 26 years and guessing you were a 23+ at $130k+ a year your pension was in the multiples of millions ($5mm+) my friend. Sure you did not have full medical and I don't know what your house, family and kid situation but if you saved some money in your personal finances over the 26 years you should be doing alright.

@1hyl, my rankings for the last three years was a flat 2. The fourth year out was a 2+. I posted for 5 jobs, one of which I was what they call a "shoe-in". The other jobs I met 90% or exceeded the criteria. Nonetheless at 57 years of age and 26 years of tenure with Chevron, I was laid off.

-bpz. What was your rankings for the last three years and were there any open jobs that you meet or exceeded the criteria on?

BS, @qiw. I was a "must move", but got laid off nonetheless. I guess they meant "must move out". Don't have any illusions with these layoffs. It can happen to anyone.

As folks have said, positions are in scope, not people. I've received 2 (1) rankings in consecutive years and am in scope. While I'm not terrified, I'm in no way assuming I'm safe. Prepare your GO400 (you should have already) and select your positions wisely.

If you are a must move it does not matter what your ranking is. But the higher the ranking the more likely you will be to secure a new job

@GexMtfm-wue I would worry less if I were ranked as a 1. Best of luck though.

High potential employees and 1s will only be laid off if they have a personality issue or their skill set is no longer needed. You will be on or near the top of each slate you apply for.

I just got my ranking. I am a 1, in scope, Must Move and I am worried.

I was not a 1, but instead a +2 and I am worried. Since I am an expat, I have not been able to network with groups in the US for the last 5 plus years. Even access to the Chevron computer system has been impossible for much of my time here.

I hope that ratings have an impact, but I believe it is more dependent on the jobs that are available, and those who are pre-destined for them.

Hgr- you are correct. Positions are in scope, there are plenty of positions held by highly ranked people. I would expect highly ranked incumbents would hold their positions.

Jobs are in scope, not people. Sounds like your friend should be competitive for a role, but I would say that we should all be worried.
