ISP: ratio of ICs vs managers gone just doesn't add up.

Yes, ICs are generally g7+ and when I look at who went in our department there was a strange lack of managers on the hit list. Plenty of ICs / Senior Engineers. Could it be that the managers protected the other managers and threw the workers to the wolves?

Recently (last 3 years or so) there has been a lot of talk where I work about the technical path to success... Those that chose this path have been more than decimated....

I'm posting this as a warning for anyone else out there that wants a high ranked technical post. It means at focal time you are up against the very managers that scheme and decide who gets the chop.. Therefore you have no chance as the managers will always suck and protect the other managers.

After all the cuts have been done, department managers are going to be wondering what happened that they have a bunch of managers but no experienced staff but by then it will be too late...

I, myself with 15+ years experience of intel expect to get ISP as I will decline the current VSP round.

How many IC's in the company? How many managers?

Managers usually be bad guys to deliver isp, vsp and erp packages. They might face the same fate later, so that ppl who have left hated them, not intel.

There appear to be a good number of 10/11 taking ERP.

any data available on what % of managers are affected across each BU? I suspect 3-5% and to make up for the required % cuts at each level, more senior technical contributors got sacrificed. Board of Directors..are you looking into these numbers???

In a open forum, they said they looked at the percentage of affected folks across all grade levels and that they are roughly equal. They supposedly ensured that no grade level was overly targeted. However, because there are roughly 12k managers total in the company, the numbers work out such that more ICs are affected, by the percentages are the same.

They protect their own but the number of worker bees are dwindling so sooner or later management will get walked as well.

@caf, ah I see. And I completely believe you, managers will always favor other managers. I just asked because in my experience IC's are generally gr3-8 and managers are gr7-9. Thanks for the clarification.

Reply to 1st response: where I come from, most senior engineers are gr6-7 and 1st line management are gr7-8. This means that the senior engineers are bucketed together with the managers for review ranking. When the 2nd or 3rd line managers review the proposals, they will always favor the other managers and screw the nom-managers. I have seen this in my own organization. Just FYI

I agree with OP. FSM are generally at the same grade level as senior or staff engineers. It is easy for them to throw one of their senior/staff engineers under the bus as ssl distribution needs to happens at 2nd level. This way lots of useless and non technical FSM remain at the company.

I think you mean managers are generally gr7+, not IC's?

I'd love to see a breakdown of % of VP's affected and % of PE's affected. Bet you anything 10-20% of PE's were affected and 0-5% of VP's were.
