Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Need your suggestion about my team environment at Intel

In our team , few members are working pretty hard (Incl. me), & rest 2-3 folks are just simply enjoying . Manager don't get involve them in tough project and in fact they are always seen sitting in their desk surfing youtube/FB , gossiping in cafe ... Literally nothing good delivered in past year & it continues this year ..

They still not got ISP, because maybe they lick the managers assand keep them happy & manage atleast SSL3 . It hurts me sometime that , they keep enjoying the freedom of coming late , OOP as they wish , and I & other members working hard and we also manage to get SSL3 like them !

Whats you take.. Is it normal that in a team of say 10 people, 2-3 like these will exist.. ?

Something , I can talk to my manager about ?

This is what you do:

Make sure they get written, specific, measurable, action-oriented, and time-limited ARs.

Do not help them.

Track their AR completion. Escalate when they fail to deliver.

Repeat.

If they have their AR shields up, you need to drill through them. You do this by suggesting them for the AR. "I think this would be a good thing for Bob to do. Can you help us with this Bob?"

Also, listen to this podcast, Concealed Incompetants. Fast forward to 2:10

managers and their pets are the biggest deceiving two faced backstabbers I have seen.

only the lord Jesus , who sees and knows all will bring judgment to them. You know who you are.

The same behavior in slm/flm on to any intel new acquisitions. Buy it n kill it by merging n re-branding or change name. Intel don't get it that mass ppl don't want to use Intel name.

OP Here. ..

Looks like some folks back lashing me of being coming & complaining about my peers here instead of concentrating on doing productive work .

I guess everyone is here because they have issue with the things going in Intel / Or maybe their manager or so .. And lately, the environment which is created have forced those things to come out & maybe creating overall negative experience

The reason I pointed that , they are not contributing the bare minimum is based on Deliverable you can see what your team does and what they individually contribute & in that too they might need so much of supervision . Those folks are in team from past 3/4+ years, and the question they ask are very basic by now.. If they cant solve them by themselves ,I feel stupid when I am compared similar to them at SSL3 in focal .

Looks like talking to manager isn't a good option as per suggestion .Maybe I should keep my productive work going & look for better jobs outside . Also, Be happy with what I am doing & delivering , avoiding negativity.

Thank you everyone for your feedback

About a year ago I was fed up with a similar situation. I have complained ti my manager whom I knew I could trust. His reply was: " I am aware of the situation, but would like to get the bums back on track". After a few more months without a change in sight, I have resigned and left Intel to another company. In my new company such a situation cannot exist.

Yep, Intel managers have too much power and can ruin many careers of high performers. The only check and balance is with HR/ODI, but those are very much long shots.

FLM and SLMs are the worst part for Intel culture. There are so many of these who are here for many many years and have made good connections above them and in other groups that nobody can harm them. MFT is a big joke in Intel it's made only to hear good things about managers. Once someone writes anything bad there, these guys (including the HRs who tell everything to the manager about who wrote that feedback) slowly push that employee out of Intel. I have faced retaliation of highest order from my SLM for giving him a bad feedback. I didn't know it goes to the managers as is. I was shocked he worked with the HR and quickly figured out I have it to him. I thought HR would keep it confidential but it was a trap. This guy starts blowing up my small small mistakes (not technical, I was one of the best performer in that team) like coming in late by half an hour, spending 20 mins talking to friends in cafe, playing pool after office hours etc. he did this for 2-3 weeks before handing me an mid year IR. He pursued and even threatened me to take immediate separation. He didn't even allow me to apply for internal job postings as he would get a mail when I apply for any job and the new manager would talk to him and this a--hole use to give a very bad feedback. He made sure I don't get out of his team. HR my SLM refused to help me and I know they were very close to this guy. Finally I took CAP which was made in such a way that I shouldn't be able to accomplish. I worked more than 18 hours a day to successfully achieve that CAP. He didn't stop troubling me till the full year focal. Fortunately because of my very high performance which was visible to my own team and cross functional teams, I was given many team and divisional awards. Mt manager still managed to give me no pay raise and no SL saying due to mid year IR he can't give me any merit increase or SL. Rest is obvious, I got an ISP. I worked in this industry for 15 years but was never even close of any IR in any companies I worked for previously. I feel joining Intel was the worst decision of my life. This company knows best how to hire the good talent from outside and then waste it completely by passing them through this hopeless system of policies and managers who only care about saving their own ass I have already recovered from my ISP but feel sorry for folks who still are there and have to deal with this hopeless company.

@tlf vs OP, slacker vs good worker, bully vs intimidated.

OP came here not knowing the bully were already here. The bully didn't think OP can have the same freedom as he can, and is especially angry when OP complained about him without his permission.

Pretty much every team at Intel is like this. The established do-nothing "heroes" are generally the manager's favorite. I would STRONGLY advise against complaining to your manager, because he/she will turn on you - I have had this happen to me twice and so I do not bother complaining anymore. When faced with this situation, its time to move to another group (where its not as bad). No group will be perfect. If you cannot move internally - go external. But do not remain in an environment where you do not get credit for your work , or your career (and health) will suffer.

@HKlwsEs-fqn, you must be kidding us (or, at least, me). ICs are to do technical job, and bring value to the table. NOT to investigate who is talking The Truth, who is talking Lies... Manager should help people to set and achieve their goals, I mean objective goals, NOT what your clumsy, ignorant manager THINKS you should do. I had stubborn, idiotic manager, who did NOT want to discuss his prejudices (very firm ones). In contrary... He was happy I am in no way out situation (he knew the context, but he missed the important detail, which put down this house of cards). ;-)

Well... Guess, lot of INTEL ICs/people are paying very high price for such/similar negligences.

As pointed/stated: First level managers at Intel are the poorest I have seen in high tech companies.

This is The Truth. Like it, or not. FLM and SLM are The Weakest Links in INTEL, thus INTEL is ought to fail.

For those of you that recommend the OP to do nothing or attacking the OP, you're part of the reason Intel is struggling. The right thing to do is to have an open conversation with your manager. You don't have to name specific names to the manager, but just raise it as a general concern. It's possible that the people you think are not pulling their weight actually do a lot of work that you don't see either at work or at home. If that's the case, you're being unfair to them by not at least try to find out if your impression is correct. It's also possible that what you observed is correct, but the manager was not aware of it because they manager doesn't necessarily interact with all technical people as much as you do. In that case, you'd be helping your manager out by raising his awareness. The last scenario is your observation is correct and the manager is aware of it but condones it. In that case, speaking up may still help because it let's the manager know you're aware of the issue and the manager can't take you for granted at focal time. The manager will know that if he/she unfairly gives you a bad rating, you might appeal. The least likely case is what you observed is correct and the manager is going to retaliate against you. If that's the case, it's best you find out soon and move to another group or company.

"Report it to the manager. if he/she does nothing, then give anonymous negative feedback about your manager on the manager feedback tool done every year."

Intel stopped the manager feedback tool. So how do we give anonymous negative feedback now?

many people also work from home or perhaps dont work standard 8-5, but still get their work done. they might be taking a break 'watching YouTube' or just bringing up some music to listen to while they work. And if they come in 'late' -- what business is it of yours? perhaps they are working from home in the morning or working in the evening. As long as they are getting their work done and the manager is happy with them, it shouldn't affect you. If it is having a negative affect on you getting your work done, then you have a right to complain. Otherwise, you do not.

OP -- learn proper English before you communicate with your manager. It will go a long way towards you communicating your complaint effectively. Same goes for some of those posting replies who appear to have the same communication issue. Or perhaps "they" are actually "you" and you are just trying to embellish your theme to gain attention here.

Those slackers are the Intel Future Management Team. A good portion of the slacker time is spent coming up with ways to trash valuable employees like yourself. This is how the BK burger king leader sleazed his way up to CEO from a mediocre engineer in Fab 7.

If you are the nice guy employee who quietly gets massive amounts of work done, you will be given ISP. Intel promotes networkers, not "workers".

Best not to say anything but start coming up with a plan to leave. Be sure to "forget" how to train your vaunted peers and quietly sabotage projects with the hero slacker employees name on them. Intel wants you to play dirty so run with it.

First level managers at Intel are the poorest I have seen in high tech companies. A good number have only 3 or 4 direct reports. They take all the credit for the work done in their teams, highly political, two of the managers I've had have even violated Intel's Code of Conduct.

These first level managers need to be replaced, but they manage upwards brilliantly!

They learned how to navigate politics through networking and working smart or appearing to work smart. It's all about perceptions.

The easy times are when you know you have 1-2 slackers that although you keep around for budgetary reasons, you'd get rid of in a heartbeat if you have to.

Nope. Wrong. these slackers are 10+ years with the same manager, and manager trusts these idiots... And the trust during these years is MUCH more important then technical superlative of younger team members.

Well, this is the problem which very hard f---s INTEL's hens, but this problem is NOT a rooster! ;-)

Do NOT make waves, let it go. The manager may not do anything about it because it is all about the quid-por-quo of I let you goof off and you give me good feedback (to the manager).

Something , I can talk to my manager about ?

I would advise you NOT to talk to him about it, since he sees the entire team very differently than you,or your hard working pals. He sees these tanking folks as "High Level" guys and values them as "Thinkers", so they in his eyes organize for all others know-how and work (in the team) effectively considerably better (since they 4 are constantly in the pointless meetings).

BS as it is, pointing to this you'll show disrespect to your manager and these people, although most of them including manager (all 4) are indeed bull-sh@tters.

Try also to understand your manager: he must trick his mind somehow (unconsciously), to truly believe in his role as irreplaceable (wise) person in the team! ;-)
