This hire is purely symbolic.

Intel CIO isn't a strategic role and this woman - or hundreds of others - will likely do it just fine.

"IT is purely operational.

This is a big nothing-burger."

A major shakeup would be to see a strategy that leveraged Intel's true strength to really grow credibly.

A major shakeup would be cuts where the layoffs were strategic and could be openly shared and defended logically by the CEO

A major shakeup would be to see resource hire, moved to places that really needed it to hit realistic and competitive goals that people could believe.

IoT, 5G Modems, Memory those are jokes...

Cloud / Servers is credible, but the revenue and growth are NOT enough to support growth in the company as it is currently trending.

Prediction: Cloud / server will grow but not enough to hide the huge train wreck in IoT, Modems, and memory that is building. Client will continue to decline resulting in continued revenue and profit drop.

2017 will see more layoffs as new 14nm products simply don't stop the client drop. 2018 will see more drops as the company struggles to ramp very limited 10nm and more layoffs become required.

One should be really out of their mind to belive that if Intel fails in smartphones/tablets so big time they will be succesfull in IOT... That's just nonsense.

Intel's mobile strategy fell apart and now Intel will be selling modems to imaginary friend - Apple? Just imagine that company who was selling "whole mobile solution" such as Centrino (where they tied WiFi with the rest of the silicone) now has "strategy" to sell modem only and left CPU behind. Being proud of that is just scary as it's not strategy but desperate move to sell what we have as we failed to create the rest of mobile solution...

It's a desperate move and anyway - Intel modem efforts will be crushshed by Qualcomm and other players who will at the end integrate modems into their chips and guess what - Intel >the king of CPUs< doesn't have CPU this time... how did we get here?

If lucky company will consolidate and find market niche but at much lower level of operations/revenue/headcount.

Old Intel is done and x86 is not in good shape for the future.

Cheers from Europe :)

@IFRgLOi-1knr LOL intel won't have any margins, their cost structure, process cost, development cost, product / design cost will cause any true IoT product make Tablet/Mobile look like a wet dream in comparison.

I assure you based on what I saw it will be a trainwreck when the first dedicated IoT products and process show up if they do at all.

How would Kim's new group feel with her as the new COO? Would it be more concerning than a bunch of people cannot move up to CIO? @1fut

@wrm : IoT is 3-5$ chip but margins can still be above 50%. Intel does not understand yet how to make money there. The key is the total cost of solution. If 90% of a new product is SW developers salary than OEMs may consider to pay more for HW if you promise to cut cost somewhere else. I tried to use Intel, but there is no single spec for any of their new IoT platforms.

You mean, like how Kirk felt when Murthy came on board, @1cmm?

Imagine how all next level down people who thought they were next in line for the CIO job feel now? Passed over with a new boss from outside who, just like Murthy, need to do something to justify their package.

For her and Murthy too, they're just like Marrissa Mayer at Yahoo. Who really cares if they accomplish anything? They'll leave or get fired with a golden parachute, collect tens of millions in stock or bonus, and go on to the next thing. Everyone knows Intel is in decline so not being successful can be blamed on how bad things were before they came. Maybe she just wanted to move from freezing Michigan to California. She probably became familiar with Intel mgmt through the IT Advisory Board, if Intel still has that.

Intel's true culture, of honesty, teamwork and hard work is gone. Too many backs have been stabbed. They are past the point of no return. Put the customer first and treat your coworkers as customers. Nobody seems to know how to do this anymore or is simply not willing. Too much "what's in it for me?"

She certainly wasn't in her last role very long.

Sep 18, 2014 - Dow Chemical Co. has named Paula Tolliver CIO and corporate vice president of business services. She replaces David Kepler

Anyone know anything about here? I'm not finding much doing a quick search.

"Intel is also in the midst of one of the largest workforce reductions in history, after announcing 12,000 job cuts in April. The company said the restructuring plan is "solidly on track," but it hasn't translated to much growth yet, as investors were not so impressed by its quarterly results earlier this month."

Pretty much sums up Intel these days.

CIO and a women, good for BK

But it can't change the overall issues at the company or what needs to be done.

1) x86 volume continues to drop QOQ, what is it now 8 straight quarters of decline with no end in sight. That means each new generation of factory needs to produce fewer chips. Each new generation of technology ( 10nm if it every comes ) needs even fewer. Intel only needs one development and one manufacturing fab to be competitive, but has three little inefficient fabs, hard to keep GM up.

2) Cloud is the only bright spot with huge profits, but very low volumes of silicon. Sadly that volume isn't enough to ramp and technology on, so 1) is a big problem for intel and why they are falling behind in process technology.

3) IoT is about less than 5 dollar chips, really, intel can make money here, LOL

4) Memory, that is another commodity with fierce competition from huge competitors, really they can make money here, LOL.

5) Moore's Law, it is done, the costs are huge, the ROI small, and look at 1) and 2) big problems.

Sorry more external people be it Murthy to fix the product or a fancy new lady to fill a vacancy and give the appearance of more outside ideas can't fix 1-5) Titanic continue to take water and has big problems.

The transformation is so obvious but BK simply can't do it, needs a real leader at the top, not some mindless leader with a bunch of minions below
