Why work so hard when it will assuredly not be rewarded. Maybe even used against you in some twisted way. Intel culture dictates that cronyism and boot-licking (and not work) will set you free.

@3btv OP is not unique. This is pretty much the case across all groups, with majority of worst offenders in SMG. Walk around any non-engineering office around 9am and 4pm and tell me what you see. And you've got to check out on Fridays it's amazing. Why work so hard when you don't have to?

I agree with OP. Why would somebody work hard when fab managers will degrade any accomplishment so you can fit their SSL4 quota and be kicked out the following year. Why?

take off at 3pm, connect to vpn from home, show as busy for another hour and maybe shoot out an email or two and then leave the IM up until 5pm, then shutdown...

nicely done. Although you stayed too late. Take off around 3pm and just send out a few emails from your cell phone every so often to make it seem like you're working. And you don't really need to be back from lunch until 1:30, just so you know.

I was lucky enough to be ISP'd before I left on my own.

I kept asking myself, "Why am I the one breaking my back around here and getting my balls busted for being late to a meaningless conference call (because I was putting out a fire on a project)?" Oh wait, different rules and different standards for favored people vs. others like me.

What made me crazy was that there was no sense of urgency to do real, beat-the-competition work and there was SO much energy put into managing up and playing the game.

This is why Intel is failing.

Well, xbi maybe thats why i promoted to grade 7 so fast. Its about perception u idiot. I arrive 9am, and the management thought i am a hardworking dude, LOL. If i were to WFH every other day, i wouldn't have promoted to grade 7 in almost a record speed. And being URM definetely have its advantage, LOL. Management can't do sh1t to me.

well, unfortunately I'm working on a McAfee product... a piece of sh--, if I made myself clear. This is going nowhere, and we will be sell soon, so why bother?

Oregon version - spend hours on reviewing plans, at offsite meetings and on the phone with architect and contractor regarding progress on your new house construction.

Folsom version - Monday/Tuesday - resolve any boat issues and/or adventures from the past weekend. Thursday/Friday - compare plans with co-workers for the upcoming weekend and finalize plans to be able to leave by noon to get to the lake and beat the traffic.

This is far from unusual. I worked with a guy at Intel who was training for a triathlon. He spent all week either eating, drinking water and powerade, going to the bathroom, or talking to his other running buddies.

OMG, this is SO true: Sadly being the guy who puts his head down and works (or worse tries to fix things that are broken) is often a liability at Intel.

I used to work my *SS off!! (Admin, not Engineer). I could run circles around my peers. Did I get promoted? No. My leads all were shocked at who was a higher grade than I because I was the "go to workhorse with all the answers". I was actually afraid to be promoted because I just couldn't work any harder than I already was.

Then toward the end things changed and I barely worked at all. I was done banging my head against the wall for NOTHING. Yep, you guessed it... I got my first ever promo. LOL I was like... you have got to be kidding me. I stop banging my head against the wall handling way too much at once, and doing it very well, and NOW I get a promo? Why didn't I start slacking earlier?!? LOLOL

True story, my friends. lol And I'm no longer there. I was so done with that place it was time to leave. Just got tired of all the BS.

No suprise. 90% Intel manager and PE are in this way, and everyday, they just pick up one target in his/her group to set 1:1 meeting to collect info. that's it! it's easy one week time gone after five 1:1 meetings, no wonder Intel moves slow, no people cares !

Too many years of promoting cronies and s----up game-players has resulted in incompetents in important roles and cynicism in the the ranks. Too much of what goes on in Intel is detached from external reality. There are thousands of people who do nothing but Internal Powerpoints and reporting and managing internal processes around such. Thousands more working on pet projects, dumb ideas and other work that may have an internal champion but that anyone with any sense would know have no linkage to Intel ever making real money.

So many in Intel "leadership" really just don't know any better than to continue this. This is the system in which they rose through the ranks and they've likely never worked anywhere else. Other than the company falling apart, why change anything???! You can always blame it on those other guys.

Agree with @xtm. The guy who gets excellent review and considered outstanding staff, does the same routine except it's with favored guys by the VP. I personally have seen so many cases. Example is a guy in Kulim office whose now head of Malaysia IT operations, nothing more than spending all his time entertaining higher ups, taking higher ups drinking, clubbing, playing office politics, go up faster than a rocket! Senior management is grooming this guy to be the next site MD! Intel today is all about who you buddy with and hang out with, nothing to do with whether you do any work or not!

The difference between this guy and the guy who gets an excellent review is that one is chit-chatting, eating lunch and working out with people who aren't in the "in crowd" and doing the same with those who are in the "in crowd" (i.e. favored by VP or GM and/or their TA's).

You're either playing the game or you're not. It 98% perception. Actual work output is nearly irrelevant.

Why are you going in so early and leaving so late? I usually find the lot is still a third empty at 10. And a third empty at 330. You are wasting two hours you could use on sleep or outside hobbies. Idiot.
