Sears has had it's ups and downs over the years. Inevitable with a century-old company. But it started going straight downhill without brakes as soon as Eddie took over.

Wasn't SEARS in decent shape as recently as 1999?

Kmart bought Sears with the money made by the bankruptcy of KMart. He took the money that should have went to the creditors and instead bought another company with it. He merged 2 losers that , let's face it, no one else wanted. Both chains would have closed up years ago if he didn't drag out the longest liquidation in history.

@1rjk - Nice try, but no cigar. "Kmart to Buy Sears for $11.5 Billion" That's the headline for the story in the Wall Street Journal on 11-18-2004; link below. "Merger" was a euphemism used by corporate to make the purchase more palatable. Remember, Sears stock holders, many of which were Sears associates due to the profit sharing program, had to vote on the acquisition before it could be completed. As a Sears associate and stock holder I voted nay, however, a majority favored the sale.

I think Raymond Babbitt said it best. Kmart s---s. Jokes aside, last poster is right. Lampert bought Kmart, then Sears. So I guess that means The Great Eddie chose Kmart first, what an honor.

1rjk Thank you! Kmart associates LOVE to correct people saying Kmart bought sears. I'm so sick of hearing it. They wear it like some badge of honor. Sears had a chance with sears grand before eddy srewed that up, but that's another story

Kmart didn't buy Sears, Sears didn't buy Kmart. Eddie Lampart bought both with his own fortune and merged them. End of story.

Are we all still on the "Kmart bought sears" screaming match. It is such a tied argument. Can we just move on. It would not surprise me in the least if the company shut down the Kmart brand first or sold/ did a spin off in an attempt to save sears

I think @cic might have been poking fun.

@cic - Yes, Kmart is so "superior" that after it bought Sears both entities ended up circling the drain. Granted, Sears was not the epitome of retailing success when the purchase was made. Oh, pardon me, it wasn't a purchase, it was a merger of two acclaimed retailing powerhouses according to the corporate elites involved! Remember that bit of corporate hyperbole? However, I guess they really couldn't describe it as a merger of two flagging retailers that were becoming increasingly irrelevant to shoppers.

Technically, KMart bought Sears. So obviously KMart is the superior retailer.

@-exl:

/shrug I was only trying to be helpful. Not everybody is going to search that and would merely want to know which brand was which. That's all. I was not trying to be insulting to you.
