Additional Severance Payment

Good afternoon.

I was laid off from HPE in 2016.

My final severance payment was in Dec. 2016.

Roughly 3 weeks AFTER my final severance payment, we received another payment from HPE for the exact same amount.

There is no name/number listed in the separation papers to contact. I've tried to reach out via email to Payroll, but have not heard anything from them.

Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks.

I along with another peer of mine were also WFR'd in April with 1 week severance (2 but they count the week you worked as severance) and received a FedEx letter this week stating they overpaid our severance and please pay XXX amount back within 1 week. I have asked several times this week via email back how they arrived at their overpayment amount (as I am not seeing it) and they will NOT provide the details. They just keep telling us it's correct. Really? How many other people has this happened to since becoming DXC and are you challenging their "overpayment" amount?

That is funny they didn't notice that. I was just WFR'd in April and received my small severance a week later, direct deposited into my account. Got a letter FedEx delivered yesterday stating they overpaid my severance by some $800 and to send a check to them and mail it in the return FedEx envelope. I was supposed to be WFR'd in March with a lot more severance, so they wait until April so they can give me less than half of what I would have gotten then they make a mistake and they want their money back. I have seen nothing but screw ups from DXC concerning this whole WFR process. What a joke.

@1zie - are you from HR?

I wouldn't say a word to anyone and I sure as hell wouldn't spend it for at least a yr, deposit some extra cash into that account and play dumb.

Check with a consumer advise group how long they have to claim it back also.

Lastly IF they figure out they paid you extra (99% they won't), say you can pay it back but only 10 dollars a month as you have spent it, if they say you spent it intentionally then play dumb and state that you thought it was your statutory payment broken into two payments.

By offering them 10 dollars it's called an arrangement and if they want to fight it they need to take you to court. I used to work in debt agency, I've seen people pay back pennies from their prison wages.

It's been well over 3 months since I received it. It's difficult to find online how long they can ask it back for. I assumed at least a year, but it sounds like you're both saying 3 months... so I should be good then.

I appreciate the responses, thank you.

Agree with @-opg ...

Bank it in easily pulled and non-shrinking (not an investment) account. Hold for 3 months, THEN spend it.

A ditz I (really really wish I did not!) know received a double roll-over check for a retirement plan. She invested the extra $$ in a high-risk fund. When they came calling for their unintended overage the high-risk investment had dropped in value 50%. Probably had the IRS on her for the penalty taxes as well.

Bank it. If no contact from HPE within three months, spend it. Stupidly ok their part does not necessitate an ethical response in your part.
