Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM lost the battle long time ago

This board is just another proof of this - the company lost it's soul, passion, sense of purpose. All employee engagement at IBM is fake, there is no sense of loyalty (for a number of good reasons) and there is no common mission employees try to achieve. A company like this may give you a paycheck, may put you in a position to learn something but will never inspire you to do that extra push that's needed to be successful as an org or an individual.

For a moment, pause and think about this board and the dynamics here (I've been here since 2015). Very rarely people engage here, share thoughts, share info, try to help each other or even get upset at each other. We'll daily have a few posts on developments, a ton of views, but very little engagement, contribution. People just do not care, would not bother to engage.

Contrast this with any other tech company here, and I am following most of them. From Cisco, to Oracle, to Citrix, VMWare, Qualcomm, HP/HPE, DXC/CSC - all of them have problems similar to other but their folks are pissed or inspired, defensive or argumentative, whatever the issue is there is ton of passion pouring out of those posts. And yet, we do have the same number of views, but people here are silent and lethargic, just like my team nowadays.

Do not get me wrong, after 11 years at IBM I met many talented and inspiring folks around - I think that the soulless nature of the org changed each of us at least a bit. For the worse.

@ytm - I am the OP - Yes, I do participate in non-layoff discussion on non-layoff topics. In my experience, most of engagement comes from new joiners, job candidates, and interns - a good example for this is r/IBM on reddit - the community started as an internal IBM info sharing group but quickly went into decline with new folks taking over (e.g., interview questions, benefits questions, training questions, etc.) - Alternatively, look at LinkedIn, pretty much all discussion / posts are self promotion - there is very little substance there, it's as fake as it gets.

Anyhow, this just my two cents here and I might as well be off, yet this thesis fits very well into the workplace dynamics that I see at my site every day...

S.N.W. Very well written and caused me to pause and reflect. I assume that was your intent. I retired from IBM more than 11 years ago. I started there when employment for life was the norm. Things changed and are still a changing. You said the dynamics of this board changed. Yes it did. What would you expect for a board whose title is “Topics regarding layoffs at IBM”? The dynamics of many IBM boards have changed over the last 15 years: Yahoo, Linkedin, Facebook, etc. I do see much more engagement in other venues, although a small percentage of the discussion is about layoffs at IBM. Do you participate in any of the other venues? If not, why?
