Why is it that some employees are running around helping customers while others are just standing around?

You are lumping corporate America with it being the only capitalism.. Ok just cause Corporate America which has been this way for many decades doesn't mean it's the only problem. You obviously are somewhat new to Lowe's. We had SPIFF's. Taken away.. We used have department bonuses every MONTH and more then SSEI. We used to get 10% above cost on SOS orders for ourselves. We used to get paid for not using our floating holidays. We used to get a bonus every thanksgiving. We used to get $$ for signing people up for credit cards.. So if you don't see how this company is socialism now then you never will.. No other country has the pay ratio of employee to CEO like America. We had a drive in the past to stay. To grow Lowe's. It helped the company and it helped us. Now all we do is help the stock holders..

My store managers go get high at lunch, this place is a joke.

To the bonehead who thinks Lowe's creates a socialist environment, get a clue. Capitalism as practiced by monster corporations pits people against one another for the scraps left behind after these corporations take what they want. Lowe's is a perfect example of this. As long as anyone makes money for them they could care less about the inequities they create or what happens to their employees. I hate this company and can't wait for another job.
We have one older guy that takes about 5 breaks a day in addition to lunch. One of the cashiers called him on it and now he avoids her.
Who cares really??? Seriously they have made it so we are all the same and except for SSEI which is impossible to make now we get lumped together whether you are 1 year or 15 years same pay rate adviser. Whether you work hard or don't work hard you are paid the same. Whether you have a machine license or don't you are paid the same. Whether you can do your job duties or you can't.. We are paid the same. It's a culture that breeds laziness. It's socialism. It tears everything down. Makes the good stop and the lazy continue to be lazy. It's why its the same in every store. The good leave the bad stay.
I disagree about the age thing. We have young and old that stand around and bs all day long. From 18 to 70. One guy even arranges for his friends to come in and pretend to be customers so they can bs even longer. He laughs about it in the break room. I've been with Lowes for 4 years and I have never seen so much standing around, blowing off tasks, avoiding customers. And that's from associates of ALL ages. I don't know what's going on, but managers definelty know its happening and just walk away from it. There were two of us stuck late zoning our department recently because we got slammed with no help right before close. The managers and at least a dozen associates stood around talking instead of helping us, even when we begged them to help us. Then we got yelled at for taking so long to finish.
We are so understaffed that we were still putting away fridays freight today.
That varies from store to store. We had some good young people that worked hard,'some ladies that worked hard and some old guys that worked hard. Problem is a small percentage of the store did the bulk of the work. If we called out the lazy ones Hr said it wasn't fair. Yet raises and bonuses are for the store, individuals don't have to put in equal work. Only 1 person in plumbing would drive equipment, the others were scared of heights. A lady in milworks couldn't put away moulding because it was heavy. 1 stick not a contractor pack....
So the HR lady won, most of us quit and now the store isn't very busy. But everyone is lazy now. One of the more pathetic slackers actually got mad when He found out I was leaving with my last paycheck. He said something like now they are going to force me to work and it's your fault. I laughed in his face and now as a shareholder and occasional customer. I make sure to let him know how messy his department is.
Look at the age bracket. Typically the younger and new people sit around. The older help out more. It is the change of the times. Since Lowe's thinks we are all equal why try harder?? End of the day I still get paid nearly the same amount as someone who does more or less.
