Quitting to save layoffs

If someone quits will it prevent others on the team from being laid off?

It absolutely does not, at least not in merchandising. First hand knowledge of one persons resignation in april and then the April layoffs happened impacting the same team.

@uxn has this nailed: "Possibly, but I wouldn't count on it." - I think it's very unlikely it would save jobs

Doubtful. I think it's like the hunger games. They have to sacrifice so many people per round, right? It's hard to tell though because they aren't being forthcoming with all the change and what the plans really are.

Not if talent assessments have already taken place.

Possibly, but I wouldn't count on it. If you're a long-term associate who makes "too much" money, you're on a list somewhere. A resignation might save someone else in the next round or two of layoffs, but it seems no one is safe anymore at the home office, no matter how you perform.
