Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Just about every store's mood is "exhausted" or "frustrated"

Or, at best, "so-so". I've been following this for a couple of weeks out of curiosity, looking at regions, markets and individual stores. At first, I've been having a "is it just me?" moment. Turns out I am not alone. Far from it, actually. Very depressing.

For those that like to ask "why don't you quit?", well, all things considered, I'd rather be employed. I get the feeling that the kind of people asking that question are not in the workforce, or maybe they are but they just storm out of the door at the first signs of adversity so they job-hop.

The kinds of people asking that question probably don't have a mortgage, cars, student loans, food, utilities, healthcare, savings and so on to pay for. They are either independently wealthy or, more likely, they are lazy slobs that depend on the taxpaying public to pay their way while they sit at home all day and troll random people.

Landing a new job doesn't happen overnight, at least if you are looking to set your sights higher than a fry cook. Since I am in management, I am aiming much higher than that, so my job search will take a month or two. Until then, I am biding my time and s---ing it up. I'm not just going to storm out if things don't go my way. I recognize that things are not getting better at this company and therefore, I am plotting my escape.

If your job search lasts months why not just start months ago? You could have transitioned to a new job by now.

In our store, a ton of tools and clothes. No one orders appliances online, not for pickup anyway, those are delivery.

I’m very happy with my job, pay is comparable what I could get elsewhere as an ASM, good people to work with DM reasonable.

I hope the turnaround/transformation works. Our online orders are the biggest headache, just too damn many of them.

@swm A lot has to do with management not saying all the workers are bad, but from good eggs we have bad eggs. What really gets at me is my SM is the worst, he makes the most the most and does the least out of everyone at work. All I hear is him bossing everyone around on the radios. If you have a question he won't have the answer. He makes his schedule the sweetest closes one weekday (will close rarely on weekends) and usually opens. This is the type of people that need to get fired on the spot waste of money!

This also stresses the peers because hours are cut work loads are thrown into other co workers (since they eliminated positions and hours are being cut).

In some cities its easier to land a job, also sometimes the schedules are convenient usually when your older to just harder to get another job. Maybe some are waiting till company falls to get the unemployment who cares.

When I started things weren't this bad, but as time passed its just getting unbearable.

I'm the original poster. I try to keep it as pleasant as possible around the store, as difficult as it is. The pressure comes from up top for every single metric, therefore, I'm constantly coaching and putting associates on performance plans, which comes off as negative. I have a good crew with ups and downs as to be expected but there is so much micromanaging that I'm pulled into. Every day is a Chinese fire drill.

I go home every single day drained, spent, unhappy and resentful. For a while now, when I pull into the parking lot the next day, I actually brace myself against the steering wheel and inhale/exhale for a moment just before I walk in to the store, preparing myself for another battle, not knowing what battle the SGM or the DM or region/corporate will have laid out. I feel the crushing pressure lift off of me when the day ends.

Our Kmart store looks like it is dying. Low volume store that doesn't get a quarter of the merchandise that other stores (that are doing better) get. It's like we are being starved of merchandise so we die quicker.

This time of year we expect pallets of Black Friday... the microwaves, Kenmore iron pots, holiday promo fleece throws, etc. What do we get but six microwaves, four iron pots, and about 20 promo fleece throws. The next store over from us got whole pallets of each of those items.

Our pantry looks like the shelves at a Detroit food bank... barely enough product to fill the shelves. We should just put storage totes on half the aisles. We used to have Keebler, Nabisco, and Archway cookies filling 8 feet. Now we have a few packs of Smart Sense and Vista cookies (private label of our Smart Sense supplier). It is truly pathetic.

Our toy department should be overflowing with new toys. The entire three aisles is mostly stuff from 2015.

Customers tell us the store looks like it has nothing to sell.

We haven't seen a dm or regional in six months, yet they are at other stores in the district regulatly.

I feel the same way I am miserable although no one would ever know it. I try to stay positive and smile and be happy and the only thing that makes it tolerable is the people I work with. I would like more but my pay is not bad and I live so close to my store, it take 2 minutes if I don't catch the lights. I know I won't be working for Sears next year I'm just trying to make the best of it! We all just come on here to vent since we have to put on a facade at work. It's just a matter of time.

I also am an ASM at sears and planning my get away and yes, with sears on my resume has seemed to be a black eye on the resume, One thing is in fact I'm looking to get out of retail and not have to deal with the complaining, entitled, selfish, public. Yes it has been a struggle to locate a good job closer to my home, I will not give up the search this place is s---ing the life out of me, this past year at sears has been the worst of my 30 years with the company. Mostly due to the SELFISH SGM, that only cares for himself. I have become complacent at my job, this seems to be the only way to cope with what's going on inside this building and the company.

Our store manager did the same thing under the radar, nobody knew and is now a store manager outside of sears. This manager was great and kept morale good in our store.
