Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Rif’s

Even though Verizon are rifing only 15 to 20% of management, it’s about time it’s only deadwood they’re getting rid of. They are all useless all they do is put up Road blocks , keeping union workers from doing your job. 😂 why do they need 4 vice president’s in one organization. Local management all they do is your time cards.

"Never have seen a CPA fix a cell site that is down, or anything else for that matter."

Yes, because there is nothing else involved running a business.

Perhaps some CPAs played a part in organizing/justifying etc the purchase of the spectrum that the cell site eventually relies on. But I guess that doesn't count for you.

The company puts a lot of weight on a CPA. A CPA can't be bought like other degrees.

@2skm - you mean degrees like the offshore people are bringing? BS, MS, and PhD?

Where:

BS=Bullsh!t

MS=Moresh!t

PhD=Piled higher and deeper.

I'm retired now. But after working with offshore folks for over 2 decades, it's apparent most of them learned nothing in school. Degrees are meaningless. Results are what counts ... except at Verizon.

When the union starts policing their people and demanding and getting higher productivity in exchange for the privilege of being in the union, that is when we'll see the union getting respect. Until then, the union just connotes a group of employees with a hired gun who otherwise would have a hard time competing and likely couldn't be trusted. Sad but true. You want people to believe otherwise, then do something about it. There was a time when being in the union meant something like you were high skilled or something, but not anymore now that the union takes anyone who wants to pay.

Union employee productivity will spike with less supervision? If you count the increase in orders/tickets closed out to “no access” from a bucket truck hiding in a McDonald’s parking lot waiting for the overtime gravy train to kick in, you’re probably right. Unfortunately, that’s not a sustainable business model and you’ll pay for it in the end

Verizon has been getting rid of those with just a college degree for a while now. CPA, MBA, and other graduate level accreditations are the new normal. Not to say all MBAs are top of the line, but couple that with good experience and you get some good potential. Add a CPA and it's killer.

Post ID: @2skm+Q5bSJXl

A lot of the current management mentality come from the fact that since the company required a college degree to get a management position doesn't mean the person knows anything but take tests and party all weekend. In the meantime they flounder until their friends find them a different job.

I prefer to go home each day with the feeling of a job well done. That makes me happy. The wife and kids love a happy husband and dad. When you go home after a day of cheating the system and general worthlessness, it will always rub off to your family whether through your attitudes or example. That is why worthlessness and personal success seem to span generations. For the sake of our families it is always best to be the best we can be, rather than have the least common denominator be our goal. But unfortunately that concept is ignored by many who are content to just get by. And that is a tragedy to the company, our families, and society in general.

Kind of like when you were promoted into management you were judged by your work quality and knowledge of the equipment. Now all you see are yes people or hired off the street because those same knowledgeable techs are not dumb enough to take a job where your treated like garbage and have a high stress level. Add that not clue one how any of the equipment that union techs work on functions. I’ll keep the “lazy union” job genius while you go home downing another drink hoping your numbers are good and your not next in line to be booted out.

As usual, the union wishes to be congratulated and guaranteed a living based on the work of their predecessors. Your union forebears were paid to do a job and they did it. That doesn't guarantee you anything. You are responsible for creating your own value. Fortunately, many of you do. But unfortunately, many current union members expect to ride on the coattails of their forebears, and that is the source of much of the anti-union sentiment. The lazy getting a free ride.

Its an odd situation VZ finds herself in.

Grandpah Lowell longs for wireline customers to say "screw it" to long landline repair times (the delays are purposeful for getting people disgusted and switch everything to wireless in perfect situation)..

Yet the 'hangers on, nfl hating types" prefer wireline to wireless,if for no other reason than better reliability.. Ya know those bitter clingers, clutching on to their guns and religion. The basket of deplorables.

However, after lowell is long gone, one day the older generation will be gone off the earth replaced by millenials who expect everything for free.. Not exactly a great wireless future if you just look ahead.

Screw VZ im putting my money in bitcoin..

ZERO growth in Wireless ( and getting your a$$ kicked too )

8 to 12 percent growth in Wireline ( fiber to the home and business included and doing really well)

@1fzh You nailed it.

These are the things that are not known inside, it kind of proves all the koolaid jokes.

And while VZ wants to be one company, wireless and wireline are as different as night and day. That's the fault of management, not the one's that are customer facing.

@1fzh Install and repair I wish. Let you in on a few things that are going on outside these days.

The "installer and Repairman" is not only the only employee in this company actually making contact with the paying customer that pays our salary, but he or she has also the duties of selling the products of Verizon through a program called Lead To Succeed. The employee is "encouraged" to reach a quota of sales each month.

Also, the "installer and Repairman and now salesman " is today Verizon's Chief engineers....bet you didn't know that? He or she is required to do an installation on orders where there are NO facilities.....That's right, the installer has to design the network facilities then create the plant and update the records afterward on-site through their tablets.

Now the Installer/Repairman/Salesman/Engineer now has to deal with customers in their home or business with what Verizon has "fibbed" to them about their new or existing service. They become a psychological fireman and try and put out the fires that the customers have with Verizon and it's products.on the fly to retain them and stop them from going to the competition.

The Installer/Repairman/Salesman/Engineer/Psychologicallgist perform these duties everyday rain, snow, sleet or heat with an incompetent management staff placing hurdles in front of him/her each day

There are a Million other factors that go into the technician's workday that would have you shaking your head at the complete dysfunction and a miracle that they get it done day to day. They do way more than Install and repair the network they built.

Not asking a lot but just a little respect....And the only way to get that respect I think is by visiting us and spending some time with us on our day to day operation....That will give you respect I guarantee it.

a) Who will do the outsourcing? Needs some infrastructure to do that

b) And while SOME of the union work cannot be offshored, a whole bunch of the call center stuff can. And, political climate allowing, the union people could be replaced by lower-paid non union onshore staff.

Again, I give the union credit, but don't see any understanding that there is anything else to do but install/repair when running a business.

@1nyj Why don't you go out and start a communications company without them if you are so unhappy with the Union staff. I believe they can outsource most of what you say you're doing and be just fine. can you say the same?

@Q5bSJXl-1nyj You are correct sir.......and here is the bottom line why you are on a Layoff board and the Union employee is not. Everything you just mentioned the non-Union employee is doing can be outsourced to a foreign land......Their work cannot, it's absolutely essential they are there here every single day on site and with the paying customer.

I'm so sick of the Union employees being disrespected and villainized in this company that it is disgusting....I'll say it again....without them there would be no Verizon, and today they are the employees making contact with the plant they built to the paying customer.

Can't outsource that. FACT!

And that is the hyperbole I am referring to. Do you really think a bunch of union workers built the company all by themselves and it would be doing great if it weren't for those management parasites?

Ask yourself, where does the funding come from. How do customers know about the service, how do they sign up for it? How do bills get produced, payments processed etc. Who does the regulatory work needed to get permission to offer these services at various rates etc?

I gave credit to the union, you seem unable to realize that other groups also play their part. Why doesn't the union go out and start it's own rival service without any of the useless incompetents who don't add any value.

Not everyone in a cubicle "pretends" to work, some actually do and do stuff that keeps the company going. Similarly not every field union member just hangs around in their truck pretending to work, many actually do. Give credit to others....

@Isem No sir! you are more than incorrect at diminishing the Union employee that literally built this company. And, if ANYTHING it is the legal/regulatory/planning/finance/billing/etc and throw in the boatload of unqualified lazy management staff that is killing this company with thier complete and total incompetence.

How dare you minimize the Union employees that not only built the network but maintains it and services the paying customer. YOUR CHECK is brought to you by that customer. So while you pretend to "work" in your cubical/office. The Union employees are out there working on the network they built with their hands and seeing the paying customer EVERYDAY to earn you "your check".

Make zero mistake....Without the Union workforce, you wouldn't be here today. working on the network they built. That is a FACT!

Post ID: @1nqu+Q5bSJXl

While I am not anti-union, it's the hyperbole that annoys me. Lots of functions went into building this company. Without legal/regulatory/planning/finance/etc there wouldn't be a network to build and service, without HR there wouldn't be workers, without many critical functions, including billing wouldn't be there. And many of these functions are non-union or largely non-union.

So it's not that the great union workers built the company single-handedly, they certainly did their bit. But there are lazy useless union workers just as much as their are lazy useless management (and lazy useless execs).

And it's not even all the fault of all the execs. Some do indeed seem clueless, but some of the stupid decisions are only clearly stupid with hindsight. Could VZ have carried on as before without trying some new stuff. Probably not, it's just that not all the new stuff was well thought out!

@1wns-

By no means am I anti-union. But...union employees are the face of Verizon?

Perhaps where we still have landlines and FiOS. But definitely not here, out west.

Remember a few years back when we became just Verizon...one company, and all that?

Since its inception, at least one of the pre-VZW brands (GTE, BellAtlantic Mobile, et al) should have unionized, therefore forcing the current Verizon to be a 100% union shop when those companies combined.

That ship has well sailed and this company refuses to compete in a leading way.

We're not even competing with one of our fastest growing MVNOs Comcast. They've already added 250k subscribers since August, and they're just getting started. And a lot of those customers were ours.

I have nothing but respect for those of you who came way before Verizon...before BellAtlantic...maybe even a former C&P Telephone Company employee. Those guys built the backbone/foundation of this (once great) company. My virtual hat is off you sir or madam.

To everyone else reading this...enough with the anti-union garbage. For f#%ks sake, they're not the problem of why our stock is worth the same dollar amount it was back in 2000. They're not to blame for our recent lack of innovation or competitiveness. And they're definitely not to blame for the $hit products we've launched in the last 3 years (go90, hum, etc.). Those all came from those clueless a$$holes in Basking Ridge. Wanna be mad? Be mad at our "leaders" who are leading us all down a clear path to corporate redundancy and future unemployment. Just, ease up on the unions...mmmkay?

@jgx......What's so funny? without the Union employees that literally built this company you wouldn't even be here today with a job. What is funny, is that you are even on here at all posting. We call you dead weight.

It was the Union hands that built this network from its inception....All the cable on every pole..every manhole...every central office...and not only did Union hands place it but they maintain it repaired and installed it.

It was and is the Union employees that service the paying customer from initial contact to installation....essentially every step from A to Z the Union employee did it.

Without the very physical network and plant that the Union employees built and without all the money it has earned....There would be no wireless network today.

Today, in this company it's the Union employee that is the face of this company....They are the only employees that actually make contact and see the customer every day...Remeber the paycheck "brought to you by OUR customers"? It's the Union employees once again doing that as they have done since the beginning. Without them, we all wouldn't be here, and that's the truest fact there is.

Still laughing? I'm thinking you need to know a little more about the company that you are so lucky to work for and who are the people responsible for it before coming on here complaining and "laughing" Well, I will tell you......It was and is the Union Employee.

In the content operations group, there is now an SVP and 4 VPs overseeing work that used to be overseen by a single VP. They spin trying to come up with ideas but no results. Go90 should be a good enough lesson to management and that expensive, senior deadwood should "Go" away.

The leadership has degraded to “yes” boys while they pit employees against each other. Employees take constant negative comments and deal with unnecessary embrangled personal and unprofessional off the cuff comments from ED’s to Managers. Even dealing with negative whispered comments as a manager walks by. They promote discontent and do nothing to inhibit slanderous behavior by a few contentious peers. Its a shame business is taking over wireless. As Verizon Business has been in the red for years. Taking from the profits of wireless to stay afloat. And they are retaining these folks? I am at a loss.

In retail we have managers that do a lot of work picking up the slack of other managers who do nothing at all. I agree that the ones on the chopping block should be the dead weight as it wouldn’t make a difference anyway. They are just a body to open and close the store. Anyone can do that.
