Sears Holdings continues its strategic assessment of the productivity of our Kmart and Sears store base

and will continue to right size our store footprint in number and size. In the process, as previously

announced we will continue to close some unprofitable stores as we transform our business model so that

our physical store footprint and our digital capabilities match the needs and preferences of our members.

The company on Thursday, January 4 informed associates at 64 Kmart stores and 39 Sears stores that we

will be closing these stores between early March and early April 2018.

Eligible associatesimpacted by these store closures will receive severance and will have the opportunity

to apply for open positions at area Kmart or Sears stores. Customers can use the store locator function on

our web sites to find the location of their nearest Kmart and Sears stores. Liquidation sales will begin as

early as January 12 at these closing stores. Following is a complete list of the impacted stores.

Yep, DC (distribution center). Notice that stores are closed in regions and batches. That is so the DC's can close and delivery of merchandise can be consoladated into a smaller delivery area. Makes no sense to deliver to one or two stores way out of the way from a DC or warehouse. You can almost figure out the next stores to close just by looking at the districts and the stores that are far from other stores.

@1cuk Really? There are still quite a few corporate associates. Enough of the drama.

DC is it distribution center? Usually they have big ticket items its not very easy to empty them first.

@1qde, Depending on how things are wound down. First the DC’s close after they are emptied/all employees are laid off. Along with the employees at corporate very few remain.

Then the stores will close one by one like in the original bankruptcy in 2002.

DC's will be closing soon also.

Bismarck nd sears store was located across from a busy kmart store. Located on a very busy street. Thousands of cars a day. Kmart has always had a bunch of cars in their parking lot. Not so much for the sears store.The sears lost auto a few months ago. Must have been a sign.

Store closures are now routine at lease renewal time or when a property owner wants them out for a new more stable store. California stores went along with Sears Holdings PILOT deals, which gave them special considerations. They didn't meet their employment commitments and were de-certified, so it's time to close them stores!

This very much continues to be an orderly wind-down of the Kmart B&M experience. Remarkably, upstate New York did pretty well this time. Pennsylvania did not.

Mine... A location that's been there longer than I've been alive. With a few longtime employees who were around there somewhere when my parents took me there as a little kid. So sad. Depressed just as much for that location and everyone there as I am for the pending loss of my own job. Given that it was doing okay this is kind of surprising...

They closed a lot of Sears stores in CA. Wow! WTF?

@ufg "Reasonable educations"?! By my count, there were at least 18 CA stores closed during 2017!! That is NOT a small number!! Just because they skipped it in the list before this one you can't honestly think they were stop it there. And whatever "plan" you are thinking, I don't think one really exists. Simple truth is that running a failing business in CA cost way too much money, more so because the minimum wage will keep going up every year. Only reason I can see why mine was spared in CA is because it has no god damn competition. But even then our sales were not that great and every store closure announced will just tighten the noose around our store's neck even more so because our luck will run out shortly.

@uua People were only making reasonable deductions from the information that was available. There were no closings in NY and CA in the last several months, and people thought that might be because previous closings - that obviously did include some in those states - had put the remaining stores in those states at levels of total employees that would cause SHC to lose special government support if they closed any more stores in those states. Note that there is only one NY store on the list, so they probably figured out a way to keep the NY deal squeaking by without that one, but they must've decided to abandon the CA deal.

I would just like to say, to the f---ers that said that weren't planning to close ANY stores in CA, you were full of sh--. in fact you were full of sh-- to begin with because I KNOW that many CA locations were shut down last year as well.

@asc true - there is a ton of business reasons to close a store - it's a delicate dance

It is a myth that closing stores always are losing money, I have seen the numbers past and present and some of the closing stores are very profitable. However as the company closes stores, each remaining store has to pay a higher percentage of all overhead so as the store count dwindled, more and more stores start losing money. And they close stores to raise capital, from selling off inventory, sometimes by sub-leasing or getting paid to leave early.....any number of business reasons to close stores. But they all involve raising capital to re-invest into a profit draining enterprise.

Did Hershey (Hummelstown)--the one where you excoriated the leak--avoid the chopping block or is the list incomplete?

by my count 910, down 43% from the same time last year. Another interesting note, of the 103 stores announces, only 2 are owned by Seritage...that's remarkable considering about 20% of the operating stores at Seritage properties. Also, none of the pension ring fence stores appear to be on the list...which is not usual considering they are trying to refinance them and any sale of those properties would simple go to the pension trust.

How many stores will be left in April? About 700?

Damn, I feel like my store will somehow be among the last to close so they can shaft us out of our banked vacation pay and severance.

Does anyone really believe that all of these stores were unprofitable? Total BS. Burlington Mall has over 400,000 customers a year.
