Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Resource for those wanting to start their own thing?

I'm one of the people affected, and I'm thinking of starting my own thing. Is there a resource for other QCOM employees who want to try their hand at their own company? I've been reaching out to co-workers that I trust, but would like to talk to those that are directly affecting since we all have a bit of a runway to try something new.

OP here.

@1krg, some co-workers and I actually pitched an idea (not the one I want to do) but my SVP said the business was only worth 25million after 2 years and that was not enough for QCOM to focus the money. Large corporations are not able to change direction easily. If you actually work there, you'll undoubtedly see all the excessive process that is in place. QCOM is not an innovation company, they are a licensing company. They need to always protect that business.

This layoff was done purely as a cost cutting measure. It's very narrow minded for you to think that everyone that is affected is "lazy old washed up losers". Nevertheless, I wish you the best of luck in your career and growth.

If any HW engineers are interested in trying something new, let me know. I'm on the SW side of things, but need someone with some experience in circuit and basic PCB design to help. Message me here, and we'll see what we can do.

answering many questions in this thread in a single word

Be very careful to not utilize any Qualcomm intellectual property... blah

but a few laid off old self proclaimed geniuses are going to get together at someone’s kitchen table and cook up a billion dollar business to “show those guys at Qualcomm”? ... blah

@1krg and people like her or him are the reason why Qualcomm could not unlock the full potential of its employees.

Haa ha you guys are hilarious!

So let me get this straight... Qualcomm has been unable to create ANY profitable businesses since CDMA, but a few laid off old self proclaimed geniuses are going to get together at someone’s kitchen table and cook up a billion dollar business to “show those guys at Qualcomm”?

If you had that potential, why the he!! didn’t you do that while working there? Because you were a bunch of lazy old washed up losers? But now you’re full of energy and ideas? Haaa I can’t wait to see this brain trust’s idea. Someone should video the entire process which will end with misery, failure, divorce and unemployment. You guys won’t get past the first meeting where you’ll argue about the name of this group of misfits.

Be very careful to not utilize any Qualcomm intellectual property. Please review your employment agreement, as well as your termination paperwork, which may include terms that impact your plans. Note that even if you submitted an IDF which was subsequently rejected, it is still Qualcomm IP. Further, it is possible that Qualcomm owns IP which covers the areas you are technically familiar with. Competing directly with Qualcomm as a former employee is problematic and may expose you to risk.

@1fkh - you can start whenever you want and with the ways things are isn't it better to be your own boss rather than slaving for some other corp even if it means you make little less money!

It's entirely possible that comapany may not be valuing you properly.

Also if you are from dev background don't start with developing something, make sure that that there is atleast one customer ready to pay you before starting something.

Be creative. Play with ideas...research.

Even if it doesn't work, it's still better to try instead to just be stock in a fixed task for the rest of our lives.

We should all do this.
