Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

May Day - Protecting ourselves after the SPVSS sale - זה הזמן להתאגד

The last 6 years have shown that in this business, workers are nothing more than resources that can be bought, sold, hired and fired at the owners digression.

We didn't protect ourselves 6 years ago when we were sold to Cisco but this time we can do it better.

Does anyone know if forming a group of all the workers is a good idea? Maybe we should bring in the הסתדרות to advice us?

Time for a reality check, there is no evidence that Abe has a clue about anything. He had two big customers, Sky and DTV that brought in 60% of the revenue. The remaining 40% was mainly brought in by other Murdoch properties and a bunch of medium to small operators. All he had to do was show up and make rambling, unscripted comments.

My guess is that if SPVSS still had decent legacy customers, then Cisco would still be milking them for whatever they’ve got. Looks like the old cow’s dried up, and their dumping the carcass on Abe. Whatever plan he might have, is basically the equivalent of selling what he can for shoes, handbags, pet food, and glue.

Customer momentum; a new one for me . Did anyone check in what direction they were running?

@SXMo2co-1tju Good comment - important to remember that private equity buys companies with loans. The company is then saddled with the debt. When Permira first bought NDS it went from a company with a healthy cash surplus to one in heavy debt.

Maybe this time Permira can use their own cash - or at least Cisco's $4bn they lost on the deal - to finance some innovation. I've always said it Permira saw Cisco coming when they splashed the cash in 2012.

I'm an xNDS and xCisco employee. I think Abe is a great technologist, businessman and manager, who would indeed like to bring some cool stuff to the market. And he's far better than the raft of incompetents who have managed the xNDS business so poorly over the last six years.

But we need to remember that Abe's marching orders will (once again) be issued by Permira. And Permira is a private equity firm whose job is to make lots of money as quickly as possible. Just like they did with NDS the first time around.

If you want to put on the rose-colored glasses, you would do well by reading the Cisco CEO's statement: "We are proud of our innovation in video and the customer momentum that the Service Provider Video group has built". That's a thinly veiled way to spin the loss of around $4B dollars with very little to show for it. (Then again, Chuck can blame his predecessor for the acquisition.)

@SXMo2co-xvs, what makes you think the bosses will not build that Bangalore site anyway? Your 'merit' means nothing to them if your salary is higher - they will always look for cheaper engineers, and move the work there. All the better if the new country has fewer protections for workers

The thing with technology companies is that they thrive because the unions are absent - there's a culture of personal achievement and merit involved. Engineerings take pride in saying "I am better than the next person". Also, the moment you unionize, the management can always start building another site - for eg Bangalore. After all, there is an office already in Bangalore, they just need to bring in more people from LTTS.

Hitech companies are very hostile to worker unions. I dont think this would end well.

Abe would never screw us. He's not RK or YF, who bear most of the responsibility for being fooled by a boat and a fancy title

I'm not sure. However if we are gettimg back the old management, I don't trust them to do what's best for us. This looks too much of an ego thing. Going back to the good old days. But a lot has happened since then and would they not sell us out again when the exit price is right?

Keep your mind sharp and make sure that you are improving and learning from day to day.

That will be the best winning strategy which will also protect you.

But more than all, it will also be a great model for your family.
