Thread regarding State Farm Insurance layoffs

Is it better to quit or stay for a chance at severance?

Just wondering what people here think...

I got unemployment after being terminated (50+, had used FMLA), did not see it coming. Also had misplaced trust. I had considered quitting the month before I was fired because of ridiculous working conditions. I asked questions about what was going on and voiced concerns. Be prepared. Await appointment with EEOC.

Absolutely there is a targeted group! FMLA...Over 40 - 50. You are in their sights. Believe it.

@SZ6tnxW-5hgs - I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, maybe in your area there is no trend. But just because you can't see it, doesn't mean that it isn't happening. In Proximity the targeting was very apparent the last re-org, and is continuing. I can go down through teams in multiple states around me and list off the people who have a QTD, and the common trend is that they either are over 45, or were out on medical leave. I would love to see a class action suit because then it would be laid bare for everyone to see.

Well, I guess I'm a s--- a-- then, because there isn't a targeted group at all...period. Guess I'd rather be a s--- a-- than a dumb--s who believes that.

There most certainly is a targeted group of 50 plus.

There is a targeted group for 45+ and FMLA and anyone who tells you their's not is a s---ass.

There is no "targeted group" (above 50 or having been out on medical leave) and anybody who tells you that is more full of it than a Christmas turkey.

Something else to consider

There is also possible psychological damage if you stay and are targeted and terminated versus quitting. I’d discussed quitting with my family because of the ridiculous work conditions and age and prior leave targeting a few months before I was fired. I thought I’d make it to severance so I was sticking it out when I was unexpectedly fired. You get unemployment if you are terminated but the betrayal is hard to over come after 30 years with the company and I was too young to retire. Ultimately I am glad I am out but still miss a job I loved despite the horrendous conditions. Accepting the unfairness and possible illegal behavior is hard to let go of some days. I don’t want to be one of those people who doesn’t let go but it is still hard on some days.

If you were always a 2 or 3 rated employee and find you get a 1 added to the mix really ask yourself if you’d rather be the decider. Having a TM / CSM / and CM along with Executive in collusion to save their jobs and or big severances by getting rid of you is frustrating. I guess feeling powerless and not having any discussion or closure is not very satisfying. I’ll get past it but at times wish I’d quit. The unemployment money was helpful and I was almost to retirement so not much to gap as I change careers.

I must say sitting in the sunshine enjoying lunch or working on my new career while not watching the 15 minute intervals on the clock go by, using the restroom when I need to, and taking a walk while they are all still in the office helps the healing.

There is life after SF. Decide what works best for you.

I did not consider the possibility of being fired because I was a strong employee with good ratings, 2s and 3s until my last review. I did not question enough or push back when it was thrown in at the last minute.

Leave or stay on your terms for what is best for you.

Good luck.

If you decide to ride it out be prepared for continued scrutiny. The mine field of unattainable Metrics might end up determining your time with State Farm.

Don't quit unless you have a another job. make the decisions to leave and search while you still have a job, or not and take your chances on being laid off. being laid off is better then quitting and search for a new job while unemployed.

If u have 30 yrs in and are 49+ stay. Make the most while you can if your health can take it. If you are young 20s 30s. With 20 or less yrs in. Get out now. You can have a better career with another company. You will have to make the best choice for you.

There is no guarantee of severance. They can change severance conditions at any time. And all they need to say is “you didnt post for any job offerings so you are out.” Get out if you can. As soon as you can.

Make them pay you to leave

Very difficult, but here are a few things to consider:

Are you in an area that will have a lot of others leaving on the same QTD? If so, leaving now would get you out into the job market ahead of the others.

Do you feel that you are in a targeted group (over 50 or having been out on medical leave?) If so, you will most likely lose your job & get a severance.

Do you like your job and would you still like doing it with fewer people, meaning you will do more work for the same pay. If so, hang around.

Bottom line, your question is like asking what flavor of ice cream to get. We can't give you the "best" answer. No offense, but you have to look at your own circumstances and make the best informed decision for you & your family. Trust no one, including HR or the trolls on this site, which may be the same people...

Everyone's situation is different. Also, this is highly dependent upon your location, local job market, marketability of skills, number of others in your role being laid off, size of market.

There is no one size fits all answer.

For example, If I had been a Systems employee in an "overstaffed" role in Bloomington, my job search would have started way before I knew my fate.

But if I'm a remote worker with a marketable skill in a big city, there's really no rush and the severance is a nice perk.
