Layoff Volunteers

I'd like to volunteer for a layoff - given my family situation I'd be good for me to move on - do you know if SF will allow me to apply for a volunteering layoff and would something like this be normal. I am hoping to get some severance as I part way, granted this would be nice but not necessary. I'd even do it without any compensation, I'd hate to see someone lose job and then me quit just a month after that or something like this.

Do you guys have any info on this - is volunteering for layoffs right now even possible?

Our department is impacted to the tune of ~25% reduction at our site, but no voluntary severance is being offered. This is because 'they can't afford to lose' the people they want to keep. They were surprised by the number of folks who took voluntary severance in other areas. The selection process is not based on skills or performance. Much of it is based on age, i.e. targeting older, higher-paid, longer tenured, and higher-level employees. They are doing everything they can to deny it and stay just this side of legal, but the end goal is clear. On top of that the new teams in some areas will only have one Level 4. So, Level 4s will be demoted if they are to stay.

Nope. We had a team member who felt so bad about all of the younger people not having jobs. He was willing to give up how position and give it to someone else. Nope!

If a severance payment is nice but not necessary what you are talking about is resigning. If you want to leave all you have to do is write a short note to your supervisor tendering your resignation. If you are over 55, it would be early retirement. I highly doubt the company will pay a severance unless you are in an impacted department.

@rng is correct - this is what you need to know: "If you are not impacted you can't volunteer for a severance."

It really depends on your area. Fire Proximity is very targeted by zip codes and you are either impacted, or you are not. If you are impacted and there are openings in your area you can opt out & take an involuntary severance. If you are not impacted you can't volunteer for a severance.

If your are retirement eligible you can ask your management to put you on the next list.
