I don’t want to burst your bubble, but from what my local is saying, this is a very limited “negotiation.” It’s an attempt to get a contract extension and answering those questions only: like will the medical percent stay the same, how much in raises, and the like. The contract, by and large, would remain the same, but they have to hammer out the obvious things that would affect that over 2-3 years.
It’s not a full-blown negotiation for a new contract, so I doubt your pension situation is even on the table. Didn’t want to be the one to let you down, but want you to know.

You pedant. Your carping, hyper-critical nature is likely never satisfied, finding fault in everything others do.
I hope that, during the negotiations, the pension calculation is brought back into the realm of reality where it more closely aligns with real, actual longevity estimates, the ones that insurance companies have established as a factual expectations.
Further, I hope the Union re-negotiates the lump sum to finally return to the previous rate that I have been told was used previously in our pension calculations, the one that was fairer to the average retiree, rather than this GATT-tied rate that has currently been agreed to, and to which linkage causes those nearing retirement age the most grievous of injury.
I think there are nothing but great things in our future as a company, and this feeling is only bolstered further by everything I've read regarding the company's plans so, therefore, I hope negotiations take this bright future into account.
I hope they can at least get a 3 year extension that will take alot of people over 30years and the rest damn close

CR King, make sure the healthcare's topnotch and affordable, you'll be needing it as you age. I had a buddy who cut his leg on a coral reef while on vacation (not in CR) and it became infected. The doctors were planning to amputate so he high-tailed it back to the States where they beat back the infection with antibiotics, sparing his leg.
Spain may be a better retirement destination. Top notch, free, healthcare.
Make sure your Queen is onboard with your CR plan, if you go through with it. Too many stories of a spouse missing their family, fed up with the cheapness, loneliness, and isolation, and head back to the US with half your nest egg.

AARP listed it The Best place for Americans to retire along with several others naming it in their top 5 Now I know this stings to someone with no pension and a busted 401k with a career that stopped 10-15 years before it should have, but why hate me for my Union Retirement Life?

@TJvTeax-1bpw, this is your life. Don't cheap out, if you can at all afford it. Wouldn't you rather live like an American King? Move to a state without state taxes - New Hampshire? Texas? if things are so dire.
bpw, you dope. Costa Rica, really dude. You know thinking people are trying to escape there to come here, yet your dream is the opposite. I have traveled to 20 different countries. For a third world country CR is not cheap. One must deal with the language barrier (outside of tourist areas), the inconveniences, and bad food. One doesn't go here for the rice and beans and you can't even find Iced Tea.
The cabs are approx. $1 a minute. I was surprised at how dirty and crime ridden the country was.
Every house, store front, repair store, all within the country had bars around the grounds, as well as on the windows. It's a virtual prison in your home. Enjoy your house arrest my Spanish King (chuckle).
Restaurants charge 10% tax and 13% service charge everywhere. Hotels charge 16% sales tax.
Costa Ricans are not overly friendly.
I think they appeared tired of the tourists, who are everywhere, and despise retirees.
I did enjoy the zip-lines, ATVs, and rafting though MA park was disappointing.
I'm surprised that the country brags 'green' because it is dirty. Just unpaved roads to the main tourist attractions. If you like other peoples wood, and to me it sounds like you do @bpw, there are many many wood carvings? The beaches have litter. I was expecting more out of the country and the people. They like trying to get the most dollars out of the tourists and retirees.
I'm not stereotyping all Costa Ricans.....!! My time in Hawaii was the same price, but all first class service! However, in Hawaii I would have missed out on all the animals I saw in CR. If you want real adventure and don't mind inconveniences then CR would be a good pick. If you want more comforts and don't want to waste time, check out the Caribbean or Australia.
If you want to cheap out, I would retire in Panama before CR.
But you, King, can have it all In Buffalo, or Love Canal, NY or, perhaps, Chernobyl or the Fukushima Prefecture Mr. Big Spender.

Only the in-region is handled by the CWA and IBEW unions. The rest of the US is handled by contractors.
