LE - out to lunch or doesn’t care?

So if you were the founder and largest shareholder of a company that was going down the drain, would you just sit there and do nothing, or would you perchance fire the CEOs, head of product dev, and the cto? So what’s wrong with LE? He no longer cares or is just plain senile of old age?

And a lot of those that can come up with something new on the menu have already left the company. The management, unfortunately, can't even tell the difference.

Oracle needs new a chef (CHIEF) not cooks (CROOKS). At Oracle there are too many that can do what's asked but not many can come up with something new on the menu.

Very true : Corporate BoDs are typically a bunch of over compensated buddies of the CEO who provide little or no oversight and act as a rubber stamp. Don’t count on them to wake up in time, if at all

Especially in the case of oracle . Ellison is a bully leader and Hurd is a Scheister with Catz as the Jewish mother with the first-grade-teacher tone and delivery. Worst female leader ever. Ugh.

I suspect that LE felt there was no way for Oracle to make the changes MS made. I think he assumed from the beginning that Oracle could not do cloud development and never even made the attempt.

The last few years have been just a jump-on-the-cloud-bandwagon to prop the stock up for a few years. Make a cloud attempt and make it look like you are building cloud tech for as long as you can get away with it. You can fool the analysts for several years by just saying you are doing something, faking your cloud numbers, stretching everything out as long as possible.

Well, they are now done. I believe this year will be the end, quarter after quarter of bad results in terms of cloud development, customers starting the migration from Oracle DB, disgusted with how they have been treated. Once they are gone, they aren't coming back, no matter what BS the 3 stooges spin.

I know some good people who are on the way out and some others who have left already. It's really over with. Stock will tank this year, and remaining people who stuck around for the stock price will be out.

LE would have to first admit he wasnt the person to take the company forward.

Oracle may be a public company, but it really isn't subject to the market influence as much as folks say b/c Larry controls everything and has his lackey's CATZ & HURD minding the store to HIS strategy. Back to the Future is just a sideshow distraction with the oracle "young" campuses in Texas and elsewhere in India. He's riding this thing out.

There's a reason Oracle has no real growth in its base revenue for years. They just rob Peter to pay Paul as the old saying goes. They acquire a new co to offset any losses in revenue. But they're running out of things to acquire to offset the looming cloud storm. It may be an epic flood that kills them off. Not to go all Biblical, but you get the idea.

Two things to remember:

Windows is/was the defacto standard for desktops, and Windows NT/2000/2003, etc. servers were well entrenched by 2006, even if chair throwing Steve was gone. ORCL may have lost that position as a defacto standard for DBs and won’t have that leverage

Excellent summary @TQzqNlp-1tuz. I left Oracle a few months ago do to their under the radar layoffs. It ended up being the best thing to ever happen to me. I had become part of the toxicity of the culture which breathes unethical selling. You get so emerged you don’t realize you cross the point of no return. It’s was apparent in this last year, Oracle is struggling to compete whether it’s SaaS IaaS or even PasS. Oracle is a name that i struggled to influence new customers to come over and trust us. And the customers I did have were locked in and felt hopeless if they can even afford to leave Oracle. We make it hard our customers through every stage they work with us. Oracle cannot compete and the brand recognition of what they may have had at one point is long gone.

The Microsoft plan went like this:

  1. Founder realizes he cant take the company where it needs to go

  2. Founder leaves to become philanthropist, appoints trusted lackey

  3. Trusted lackey flops around like fish out of water for 5 years

  4. Board gets tired of losing, seeing the company on the edge of bankruptcy.

  5. Board finds talent in company, promotes him.

  6. Trusted Lackey disappears from scene, barely remembered to history.

  7. Talent cuts, chops and whittles company down to only its essential mission ( e.g. THE CLOUD)

  8. Talent saves company.

Could Oracle do this? sure. Oracles problem is that its not 2010, its 2018 and in 2010 Microsoft only had to compete against AWS. Oracle now has to compete with AWS AND Azure and they both grow bigger every day as Oracle while it slowly move from steps 2 thru 8 for another decade. Do you think Oracle can survive against AWS and Azure for ANOTHER 10 years with no executive leadership? no.

Oracle cannot compete in the cloud without staggering amounts of capital and time and here in 2018, it has neither. In 2010, they had capital and they had time, now the company finds itself on the wrong end of a debt curve and an equity market that knows a 'pig in a poke' when it sees one. The market will forgive you to some degree if you dont make your numbers.

They will make their way to the exits if they think you are screwing with the numbers.

Guess what strategy these geniuses have decided to go with? Thats right, exactly the wrong one. I will give Oracles executive management this, they are remarkably consistent.

Fact: When your competition grows at 40-50% per quarter and you grow by 1-3%, you cant build a cloud fast enough to catch up.

Could they buy a cloud? ( A standard oracle engineering solution- just buy your way out of it) Again, in 2010, this would have been smart. Rackspace would have given them the IaaS culture and 9 modern data centers at just the right time but again, its not 2010, its 2018, even Rackspace is abandoning the public cloud business because even Rackspace ( a pioneer of IaaS and the home of Openstack. These folks are pros. ) finds competing with AWS to be not very lucrative. Rackspace now works with AWS in a managed service market which is good for the bottom line. AWS and Rackspace will benefit from this partnership.

How about a Merger with IBM? Sweet Jesus and Mary, thats almost as lame an idea as a merger with HP. It consolidates the market, and thats good to some degree but does it give you a cloud to compete with AWS?

No. And for your troubles you inherit more problems than you can shake a stick at. Legacy software is a curse that weighs you down.

So, here we find ourselves, with a company thats products are rated by CIO's as the least most likely for them to spend more money on, the least popular database according to other DBA's on a platform that cant scale fast enough to hit back at AWS.

In short: This race, this technological generation, for Oracle - is over.

Oracle lost. turn out the lights - the party is over.

And keep in mind this little fact:

The "proof of cloud" didnt come through the existence of AWS. The "proof" of cloud came through the existence and the success of Azure. Think about it - in 2006, how many of us said "Microsoft is finished" and yet, here they are competing and doing rather well against the behemoth of cloud - AWS! Thats a hell of an accomplishment. Microsoft is a rare example of a legacy software company that didnt die on the wrong end of "Bells Law", it survived, and thrived. Microsoft proved it can be done, but it cant be done through acquisitions, it cant be done with "Lawfare". It has to be done with commitment, executive sponsorship and...

Buckets of money.

If you are still at Oracle and you see how Azure is scoring against AWS - remember this. That "Number 2" rating is where Oracle would have been, had Oracle been run by executives who had the interests of their shareholders in mind, instead of preening their gigantic egos on stage at Openworld.

While Bezos and Jazzy ate their lunch and dated their women and took their top talent.

If you are no longer at Oracle, consider yourself blessed and lucky. Now that youve cut yourself free from the sinking hulk of the sinking ship S.S. Oracle, remember that youve got a future; granted that future probably involves using AWS or Azure but you have a future, unlike the poor bastards you left behind who continue to toil in the jungles of the Oracle "Death March" like the prison camp in "Bridge on the River Kwai".

Somehow, they are doing what he wants them to do, not sure why that is or what his plans with Oracle are, but they are doing what he wants them to do. So, they're not going anywhere.
