Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Commitment Coaching

I’m just looking to gain insight into how this is being used in retail stores. Are managers setting a blanket commitment for the whole store and holding individuals accountable for the behavior(s)? Are the commitments collaborative/flexible based on what you’re struggling with?

Lastly, have you or anyone else been advanced through the SMP process due to performance/negative observations?

My manager explicitly warned me not to talk about the level of SMP I’m on (Written Warning) to other representatives. The new system seems like it is just there to justify terminations, but at the same time, doesn’t it open the company up to lawsuits based on wrongful termination/discrimination?

It just seems so subjective.

Same thing is happening here in San Diego at Verizon corporate, I also feel this is just a paper trail to fire us. Is there anything we can do?

FLS2, Same issue here. My manager gives the slammers in my store softball commitments and even gives them a heads up when SHE needs to do her obligatory coachings. Just know all of their hire ups from DM to Director always expects there to be low performers, or bottom feeders that the company could do without in every location. It sounds like the OP has already been advanced through the SMP process at a written warning. The process starts with a verbal warning which is non documented, a written warning, and a final warning. I’ve already considered transferring to a different store with new leadership, or perhaps a lower performing store in hopes that they close within the next year which would allow you to get riffed with severance. I have considered all this myself as a rep. I’ve consistently been a top 10 performer in my district based on my strong ability to sell and close phones, tabs, business solutions, and I don’t let anything walk EVER. I don’t slam jp’s and hums therefore I am a target to Verizon and their shady leadership, don’t let one person dictate your worth over their personal bias. Good luck! P.S. Thank god for the new comm structure btw. You shady reps never deserved 80k + anyway. In fact you were all the death of Verizon!!! Now that the well has run dry, go away!

@1map, I have nothing to do with your feid with 1bmt. Further, I think your generation is poised to do great things.

One thing I’ve always admired about millennials, one of my daughters being amongst your class, is your unflappable willingness not to judge, not to stereotype, and to accept everyone as they are.

However, it seems to me that, while you’ll accept every action on earth, every person’s right to do what they want, and for them to be left alone, you harbor a blind spot where you make an exception to your accepting agenda, and feel it’s appropriate to assign labels such as “grandpa”, and assign the label senile.

Why do you deem it acceptable to malign and mock seniors? Would you do it so freely to any other group?

It serms you have a double standard clowding your sense of fairness

@bsy, it saddens me when I hear someone is so desperate that they open up as you did in saying, “It seems like this is something a terminated employee could fight in court.”

Is there no other recourse available to you if, as you’ve indicated, your manager has it out for you?

Do you really need to be terminated based on ome person’s, possibly tainted and prejudiced, subjective judgment of your worth?

I find it hard to believe, if you’re being upfront about the sitiation, that you cannot find some entity to advocate on your behalf, rather than your plan of litigation after a firing.

If, only, there were some means of finding a group that would go to bat for you when faced with unfair, seemingly arbitrary treatment.

Best of luck.

I’m not on SMP yet but I do have an SM trying to get rid of me as well. He has literally screamed at me in the inventory room before and when I told my GM I felt threatened by him the GM called him in and he denied everything. Best thing you can do is look at other jobs. At this point I’m ok with a pay cut.

Go to the wireless board!! We don’t want to hear the wireless whining day in and day out. You all sound like a bunch of spoiled brats....”he’s touching me” “I’m gonna tell mommy on you”.

@1qrj: You okay? You seem pressed. Maybe spend more time in your therapist’s office and less time on this forum? Just a suggestion. Happy holidays, you little twat!

Sigh, hello again unfunny guy. There are probably nine-year-old boys with which you could find an appreciative audience.

@mtj: Thanks for the detailed reply!

This is how my store used to operate. We have a new GM now who writes out a blanket commitment and each SM puts that commitment in the coaching portal for their team, regardless of the metric(s) impacted or desired performance.

Have you received any type of SMP paperwork as a result of coachings submitted? As I mentioned, I’m on a Written, and an SM in my store absolutely has it out for me. It’s day 3 of the month, and I have three negative coachings in my portal. I don’t know if I should talk to my GM or just reach out to HR.

It seems like this is something a terminated employee could fight in court.

Anyways, thanks again for your feedback!

Commitments are individual based. My manager will ask me to make a commitment. If I struggle with coming up with one he will look at my numbers and say “ok how about you commit to pitching Hum to every customer” or something absurd and blanket like that. Then they’ll observe me on the one customer I didn’t pitch Hum to (because I got a watch or tab or customer is yelling at me over their facebook or something) and pull me into the office and say “good job getting 3 new lines, 2 pull through items and $500 in accessories all with TMP, but you didn’t pitch a Hum per your commitment so this will be going in your digital locker. Note: they do NOT do this with the “favored” reps in the store. They usually come up to them and say “hey I’m going to observe you on your next customer, make sure you pitch a Hum so I can write a good coaching on you” but if you’re not one of the favorites they’ll observe you towards the end of your transaction from across the store and you won’t know until they tell you. It feels like a way to coach out via behaviors and leave a paper trail to CYA. It’s a bs system. When they ask you to set a commitment it’s a trap question and you are digging your own grave.
