AT&T’s Different Approach to Older Workers

How is this for a contrast:

Too bad Verizon didn’t take this approach.

Thank you for the correction and your kind words of encouragement. If the only thing you have to say regarding the comment is one word being misspelled then obviously the post was over your head or beyond you comprehension. Addressing the restrictions on tuition reimbursement, yes it can be a pain trying to find eligible schools but they are out there & some will alter their curriculum to accommodate the stringent requirements. While the program was made to cover an actual degree track it is possible to get almost any cert you want (A+, Net+, Sec+, CCNA, CCNP, CISSP, CEH, CND, GIAC, and others) - SANS is the most respected institute in the country and they are covered 100% .

Loose vs lose. Nobody cares on a layoff site. Ever think that maybe winning the spelling bee does not equate to success in the workforce? No, the dude more likely to be using his anal retention to compensate for something else in his own house.

while a poster here wants to nitpick loose and lose, the assumption they gave regarding the 8K tuition reimbursement is an antiquated process that denies most classes in today's framework. It is geared for long term classes and degrees and has no agility whatsoever. Many people end up paying out of pocket for internet classes

yep, drn "IT Transformation", hundreds got certified on AWS and other tools including scrum and agile while others staying don't even have degrees nor certifications. Convoluted logic that obviously came from Hans the thief.

@1cgg, if you’re going to pontificate and self-appoint as wise old sage, at least add credibility to your supposed wisdom by not writing loose when lose is the word that’s escaping your intellect.

Why can’t an adult understand that loose and lose are not interchangeable?

The Problem with training/re-training employees is that if you don't use the new skill you will definitely loose what knowledge you obtained through training. VZ when through massive training hours to get employees trained on Open Stack, Linux Red Hat & Python - the number of employees that actually obtained their Open Stack certification was small, the number of employees that have actually got their Red Hat certification is zero & only a few employees actually know how to script using Python. The budget spent on training was ridiculous yet the outcome yielded little benefit.

It's not the companies job to make you marketable, each and everyone of us controls our own destiny and should not expect the company to look out for anyone other than self. VZ offers 8k per calendar year in educational benefits, employees should've been trying to improve their skills on their own. A few years ago they announced that the company would be changing and layoff's would come they specifically stated that if you wanted to remain valuable to the company you would need to learn several new skills that they would need in the near future: Linux, Open Stack "cloud computing" & Python "scripting". If you didn't believe the words when they came from the horses mouth that's on you!

AT&T claimed if you completed this training you’d have a job.....then turned around and still laid people off that did.

Training? There was no training in my market. Here's a bunch of new airscale and osu equipment...good luck.

Vz didnt take this approach. AWS certification was required by Amazon to be a certified partner (needed a specific number of employees with the certification). It was about b2b, not employees

It LOOKED like Verizon was taking that approach. IT Transformation - everybody get certified in AWS. Wonder how many thousands of hours/millions of dollars were spent for AWS training in the past 1-2 years, and most of that investment will be walking out the door...
