Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Was this an option for anybody?

But most of the employees that have been laid off will have the opportunity to be re-employed in other sectors within Cisco, the report states, as "the number of open roles in Cisco far outnumbers the layoffs”.

Read this in an article, but I didn't hear anybody from the laid off folks mention re-employment. Is this just a case of "lie to the media to make us look good" or have people been offered transfers before being laid off?

Yes, totally possible. Many already have new offers in hand for matching roles after getting the LR notice. "Use your network" - yes! Good news is that most of the openings that are available are VERY fresh because there was a pause/freeze until recently, and also most of the "new" CX roles were just launched in the past month.

I used to be a line engineering manager at Cisco before I left. Sometimes, during an LR, HR recruiters would reach out to me with an internal candidate who they thought might be close to a fit but was facing an LR. I always gave them a shot and even hired a few. I know at least a couple of my peers had the same perspective.

Sometimes, these candidates surfaced because their managers reached out to HR and advocated on their behalf. (in other words, you should use your network)

So Its totally possible to get a job during the 30 day period. However, its not substantially easier than finding a job elsewhere. I guess it can be slightly easier to get an interview, but you still have to be a fit for the job and show well in the interview. I would fully expect the hiring manager to reach out to people in your org for references ... something to keep in mind.

@W1UE1Bg-ris - So just find a job & leave if you don't like "this disfunction of a company".

It's always better to leave on your terms w/ your timing. Why let "this disfunction of a company" dictate when you have to find a new job? Is 5-6 mo salary that important? Unless you have a job lined up when LR's occur, it usually takes 30 days to find a job, have interviews, get an offer and then start. The bigger the company, the more red tape they have and the slower the interview/offer/start work process is which eats up your severance.

Save up your PTO hrs up to the available 220 (or more if you have more than 5 yrs) and use that as severance and start your new job immediately after quitting Cisco. Stick it to the company to have to find someone to do your work until they decide it's not necessary instead of you having to rush to find work.

There is no coordinated effort to find LR candidates positions before they are notified. If you're on "the list" it's up to you to then find, and successfully interview for a new role within the company. That said, I don't see any systemic bias with managers when they find out the interviewee is pending LR if not hired. Ultimately, every manager is looking for the best fit for their team.

I have found a lot of reqs have been pulled back and denied over the past few months so they are holding a lot back right now.

I transferred to another team after LR in 2016. Had to move to SJC in order to take the job...

I was a casuality of the last LR and I was fortunate to have found another position within Cisco, so it is possible.

No one is almost ever offered transfers before being laid off. You have to search the existing open req's and apply, then go through an interview process.

As @xsa said, you may have to move to get a new position.

I've heard from people who said they had someone at a high level "create" a req for them so they could transition, but that was only a couple of people and they were very well connected. IIRC, one of them decided NOT to take it as they were fed up with the constant LR's that impact Cisco now.

People were not offered transfers before being laid off. The more jobs available than those who were let go is BS. Yeah more jobs available globally, so many of those impacted would have to reapply for their job, compete with EXTERNAL potential hires for the job, and move where Cisco had deemed appropriate. Some managers with 15+ Years of experience were cut Monday and would be expected to uproot their lives and move across the country if they wanted to reapply for their job.
