Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

How are people doing on finding new jobs?

I'm not talking about people who just left Verizon last week, but those who were laid off throughout the previous year.

Somebody in another thread mentioned that they are still having no luck after a year, and that has me worried.

Have others had similar issues or were people able to get new jobs relatively quickly?

@WT9xiKl-7kwy I agree if I didn’t have prior experience in other stuff I wouldn’t have found another job. The area I’m in basically gives you work duties/responsibilities so narrow and specific it makes you unemployable anywhere else on earth unless you do other training or have other experience.

Where are people going from retail? All I have is retail experience but don't want to go back to retail. What good places are taking good retail talent

@WT9xiKl-6gqo that is an obvious sign that your group isn't producing marketable talent

8/10 of my old department was riffed a few years back. All of them are temps or contractors except one who volunteers somewhere.

Kinda one reason I stayed. That and I’ve been on and off looking for years and I’d have to move or take a remote job which pays pretty low because it can be anywhere.

They aren't letting the talent of Oath go anywhere, some of them are the best in silicon valley. They are making real products over there while Verizon is sitting on their hands. Whenever our org wanted to recruit similar talent, we received salary requests of $150k++ with 6 years of experience. Market is great for experienced tech talent because people are paying it.

Oath is way overpaid which is why they are on their way out.

@WT9xiKl-1pss go to glassdoor and find out. Plenty of tech roles do. Plenty of tech roles pay 300k+. Oath has a spreadsheet that anonymizes tech role salaries, go ahead and look at them and find out.

Only in Verizon are tech roles so underpaid. Mostly because most of the work isn't cutting edge so you can outsource them. But for the few that aren't, you can get paid more elsewhere.

was laid off 12/28/2017; was looking hard from the moment of notice with little responses; then took January off to regroup and get a serious certificate; landed a job with a slightly farther commute on 4/1/17 with a small bump in pay; which turned into a major promotion (equal to 5 in verizon) by end of October.

My advice is to look aggressively at first just to feel the waters. Also dont be afraid to take paycuts if your finances do not allow you to seat out for a year.

@WT9xiKl-swr What tech role pays 6 figures (unless you are including the bonus) and who is paying a 60% premium. Also you forfeited the $130,000+ package. Give us more details.

Didn't click the button but found a new job anyways. 60% pay raise. I was already six digit salary. Life is good and I get to leave on my own accord. I was in a tech role.

There are alot of sh-- jobs out there, and there are a few very good jobs out there, but to tell you the truth if your up in age it is not very easy to land a really great job, cause most companies will invest in a younger employee and pay them less than a older person with experience, that is a fact even if you dont want to hear it.i got a job its not what i use to make in salary but its work for now,it pays the bills

Affected by RIF / off books 12/31/2015. Due to being advised in 10/2015 that my job was being eliminated, I started applying for jobs that following week. I was hired by a company bu 2/2016. During the end of the year, you're going to have challenges in getting an interview due to the start of fiscal budgets and possible year end hiring freezes.

On the upside, I started hearing back from companies in January. Here is some advise that I recommend to help those affected:

1: Take any and all help from anyone willing to assist you in procuring a job. May it be LHH (even though they are usually useless), use your contacts and ask them straight out for leads on a job.

2: Don't dwell on the negativity of the job you left. Seriously, let it go and take your experience with you. Also, know what you want salary and perk-wise. Dont have potential employers dictate what you should get. In other words, know your market value.

3: Use Linkedin. Use it to your advantage. There are some jobs that aren't posted anywhere else and sometimes exclusive to LinkedIn due to recruiters posting it directly.

4: Clean up your resume and keep it local and handy at all times. Same goes for your LinkedIn account.

5: Don't discount smaller companies. They have pros and cons as well and may have a different work dynamic when compared to a Fortune 100/500 company.

6: Don't be afraid to use a side skill from your old job as a launching point for a new job. The good thing about VZ was that it allowed you to explore other facets of the business. Hopefully you took advantage if this.

7: Seek out a recruiter for jobs you are looking for. It's pretty easy to do on LinkedIn. Don't bombard them, but introduce yourself professionally and present a taste of what you offer. Recruiters have to fill jobs and think of it as making their job easier for the month.

8: Seek out an independent placement recruiter/head hunter to do the work for you. Most do not charge you directly for this service, but will make it up on the commission and negotiation end with any potential employer. Follow up with them frequently and have them work for you.

Laid off in 2015, last day December 31 2015. Started a new job in January of 2016 with far less pay. Our severance was capped at 35 weeks so our "cushion" wasn't quite as fluffy. There are jobs out there but not too many making what some of us made at Verizon after 25 years of employment....

Laid off November 2017 and off payroll end of December 2017. Went back to work February 5, 2018 doing the same job I did for VZ. Out of a job for about a month, for me there was life after VZ.

Former colleagues of mine found work veey quickly with the very large Home Improvement stores, while others are drivers, buses, linos.

There are a lot of opportunities out there.

Just look. The pay is not the same, but you’re likely already sitting on a financial cushion that compensates for that, and there’s often far less responsibility/hrs too.

No need to be discouraged.

Good luck, God bless.

Peace!
