I'm thinking the layoffs will be happening at the Atlanta IT center but I haven't heard any news from my supervisors. Nobody is really saying anything. Will it be a mixture of new college hires as well as direct/ more experienced hires getting laid off?

Layoff started today and will continue until next week February 4th-5th. Couple of Directors from GA IT innovation center were gone today and more are coming next week specially level 8 and level 7.
Here is the quick and dirty from 2019 benefits section 6.. If you are let go before bonuses are paid out you will get no bonus. You will get 50% of your annual pay for each year of service at GM up to six months. It seems like you will still have all of your healthcare benefits during that time as well but its hard to translate all of the legal jargon.
So if you have been at GM four years you will receive severance pay over four months at a rate of 50% of your current annual salary.
Severance package details are available on company portal 2019 benefits section 6.
One month of pay sounds like someone who was just hired within the last year.
Depending on your relationship with your manager, your severance package will vary
Can you elaborate on what happened? What general team/role you were in and how many you know got chosen as well?
@X1pTyAS-6asg was that one month pay based on how long you have worked for GM or does that seem to be the package for everyone ?
@X1pTyAS-6asg any health coverage or just 1 month pay?
Well just got my severance package. 1 month of pay....
Almost all IT work is on hold until layoffs are complete. Expect restructuring to come shortly afterward. Anyone who thinks GM will once again outsource IT is a fool. The company has saved billions through in-sourcing efforts over the past few years. If Randy Mott steps down the first thing to happen will be offshoring IT.
Datastage developer here. Just told to stop working. Received an email from an IBM consultant about what I am working on.
What team is that?
@3poi - which location?
My team just laid off most of the senior people except top performers. College hires are staying put it looks like. They were called one by one to HR and never returned.
@3tzm - That would not surprise me but that seems highly unlikely.
I just heard Randy Mott will be "retiring on the 22nd" all innovation centers well be required to hand over work to outside IT agencies and begin transiting operations over. Only top performers will be offered opportunities in the new organization. Those with experience in project management will be needed. This should be completed by the end of January.
Ive heard certain groups have to be at work the week of the 22nd. I think all the cuts will happen before then and that week will be a role call for those that.
I also heard each GM Employee that is let go will be done on an individual basis with an exit interview. In other words, you won't get a phone call in the middle of the night or come in the next morning to find your badge won't work
30% reduction for sales and marketing group. layoffs start on 15th staggered.
No idea how many I don't work in the Atlanta IT center, but I can confirm people were laid off today. I wouldn't expect it to be news worthy for just one IT center. If you know someone there ping them and can confirm it happened as my coworker did.
I'm confused, there's nothing in the news about anyone in Atlanta getting laid off.
Any idea how many people or percent were let go in Atlanta?
Can we get some more details, how it happened, what was offered etc.
Layoffs happened in the Atlanta IT center today
Agree with 2wig, at least as it relates to inexperienced folks who lack the necessary skills being thrown into dev roles. Though this is a fair way to identify who will sink or swim, it seems inevitable that it would lead to a situation where at least a good 50% of them clearly are not cut out for the work. The organization is young and has made massive strides- to the "GM is not an IT company" point, no, it's not. It's an emerging IT company. And these cuts will go a long way towards getting it to where it needs to be, as long as they are done effectively.
If they are done ineffectively, i.e. not based on merit or decided by folks who don't understand what's going on down in the weeds.. god help GMIT.
This company isn't an IT company. It's a wannabe IT company. They don't sell any software and they outsource autonomous driving software. Maven will be a fail. They hired too many inexperienced new college hires at all the centers(mine specifically in Austin..probably in Atlanta too) who are information systems majors but claim they know Java. Hire some real CS talent at one of top schools, and then you will see the difference. Change your interviewing process.. don't ask stupid behavioral questions. Ask technical questions. Over half the college hires wouldn't be able to pass a real coding interview.
These layoffs are across the entire company, not just IT. I am sure those in Atlanta will be treated the same as the rest of the company. Poor performers, top earners, and any sections of GM that no longer align to the long term strategy will be first out the door. If they intend to consolidate IT Innovation Centers, then my guess is Arizona would be the first eliminated followed by Michigan. Both Austin and Atlanta are two of the top IT hubs in the country outside of Silicon Valley. Regardless of how everything plays out over the next few weeks, Mary will need to address the bleeding as anyone left will be fleeing for safety.
IT employees in the Arizona Innovation Center have been told to be in the office Jan 22-25 . At least we get the 3 day weekend before judgement day
@mbm I've downvoted your post, just like pretty much everyone else.
You stated: "GM made a big mistake by bringing in IT..." and I state that there is no single successful company in the world that has outsourced IT. IT is essential for the success of the company and penny pinching and shipping jobs to overseas IT slave labor camps will cut costs in the short run but will ruin the company in the long run.
Why would you think they will cut the recent college grads? Historically they’re the safest. You can get two for one compared to the salary and acquired benefits of the older employees (I.e. salary, pension, vacation time, etc.).
THEY are not loyal, they do not know the automotive industry, they are not going to be here in 3 years as loyalty is not in their mentality. You can get two DISLOYALS, that do not even own a GM car, that do not care about the Company, that do not even know the history of the Company....yes two low lives college grads (spoiled by their mommy and daddy) for the cost of one faithful dedicated employee that at least buys the products the Company makes....older employees buy the milk the cow produces!!
This year will be a tell tale year for IT. If Randy Mott stays, then the shift to outsourcing will not happen. If RM leaves, then you better believe the new CIO will move more IT to be outsourced.
Insourcing was RM baby, no way GM changes It direction while he is still here.
IT could be outsourced 90%.... it is a proven concept.... GM made a big mistake by bringing in IT...
The only thing I keep hearing is that managers will know by the 15th.

Lots of rumors but that’s all they are. Unless there are insiders here, everyone at all sights is being considered.
Is The plan for these satellite innovation centers working out? I’d like to hear real opinions. Is the Georgia site stocked with high-end IT talent? Is Phoenix? Is Austin? For that matter, is Warren?
If cost cutting is the goal, does it make sense to keep all of the IT centers open?
