Thread regarding IBM layoffs

THE problem

I find it quite disturbing to see people targeting this group and that group, various mid-level positions, the poor managers, and so on, as THE PROBLEM at IBM. I’m sure some of those people might be problematic but the majority of mid to lower people, even many VPs are good people who are doing their best under tough conditions. A lot of managers are shielding their people at great personal cost. No, the problems are much higher up, much deeper, much more complex and difficult. There are some bad ones there, yes. But its really not the ones who are lumped into a group and blamed on this forum. Again, this blaming and targeting might be exactly what “the man” wants you to do.

GDP has been paid quarterly for the last 2 years. It was just on your last check if you received one.

@XAe65fX-4zec No one has "gotten" their GDP yet. It doesn't get paid out until March 15. However, the "GDP Planning Process" started a little over a week ago, so managers have access to their pools and are making their allocations now. I'm in GBS and the pool I was allocated for my people amounted to a little less than 1% of their salaries.

Looks like some people may already have received their GDP? Can you post what your payout was (in $ preferably)? Kinda surprising because GDP is usually not announced and paid until mid-March at the earliest.

@XAe65fX-1rts "double digit ones or at least higher single digit ones for the Band 10 above"

Band 10's in GBS are not getting double digit raises and bonuses. The higher performers are getting 2-3%. Band D and up is a different story.

I was surprised our division got one, and much better than the last bonus. : -)

She can truthfully say there is a GDP even if it turns out no one qualifies for a payout.

What about all those wonderful comments under Ginni's W3 videos?

Oh Ginni, I love you and IBM and I am so proud and g-- to be an IBMer.

I watch them for comedy value and to find out if there's a GDP, she said there is and it would be harsh even for Ginni to say there is and then not pay one at all...even if it's it not for everyone and not very big.

What would be the point to watch ANY of Ginni's videos? She has shown for the past 6 years that she has been a failure.

"My prediction is that GDP this year will not be funded".... So you didn't watch Ginni's video where she stated that she would fund the GDP? I don't expect it to be much and I suspect it won't be for everyone but it would be harsh even for Ginni if nobody got it at all.

@XAe65fX-1myp,

I think everyone is aware of this across the board. Toxic is an understatement.

@1myp - How are you aware of this?

Ginni has been tasked with right sizing IBM. That includes divisions, managers, personnel, and offerings. Her focus is “Enterprise” and Hybrid cloud. Everyone believes that is where the future lies, and everything going forward within IBM will be focused on those targets. Don’t under estimate Ginni’s incentive to achieve her target. She has a vast amount of cash and prestige riding on it. Google is going down the exact same path, as suggested by their recent board moves, and hiring practices. Google has an advantage over IBM as they are not burdened with as much 1960’s-1980’s overhead, but that comes at a price of reduced relationships. Both will pursue Hybrid cloud, and “enterprise” to try and gain acceptable market size vs Microsoft and Amazon. With that in mind, keep your eye on their synergies. Everything else is disposable

Don't even expect your 1% bonus this year... remember the $34 Billion we have to shell out for Red Hat? My prediction is that GDP this year will not be funded.

Disturbing is when the less than band 10 in GBS compare their 1% raise and 1% bonus with the double digit ones or at least higher single digit ones for the Band 10 above. Funding literally stolen from the less than Band 10. It’s a fact.

In my group, we know the first and second line managers knowingly take bonus pool money from us.

Our first and second line managers are partners. GBS.

Don’t tell us that the first line managers aren’t the problem.

If 50% manager laid off, IBM possibly can be saved.

No ones going to argue with you OP, IBM is completely screwed up at the top of the organization but that said, all management throughout IBM needs to take stock of their actions. Just because those assanine ideas are pushed onto them, that’s not an excuse. Even first line managers could push back, yet very few do.

Pushing out tripe like mandatory relocation to offices 500 miles away or targeting good workers just because they are over 50 is not acceptable behavior.

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good IBM middle managers to do nothing.

The really disturbing thing is IBM has been targeting and releasing workers left and right. While middle managers and up take larger and larger bonuses as a percent of IBM earnings and contribute less and less.

I say let them have targets on their back and know what it feels like to be a worker at IBM.

Yes, the real problem is at the top. And yes, FLMs and middle managers are powerless to do much of anything. But powerless people don't contribute to the business. if IBM needs to cut unnecessary people it seems those powerless managers who contributie nothing should be the first ones to go.
