Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Has anybody had had a sleepless night?

Trying not to worry, but obviously, I’m no good at it. A sleepless night is behind me, which I spent thinking about everything and wondering is today the day I meet my end at GM. Any info about today? Which locations have the most potential to be hit today?

So last poster, what were the actual criteria given to you to select and justify? Many have speculated

Nearly every night. I'm one who had to make and justify selections for this tragedy. You might think I deserve it, but I didn't have a choice. At least I tried to save as many as I could.

Sorry about your sleepless nights. I deal with the same type of anxiety, as one of the posts below said, the next one is always coming....it’s just a matter of time.

With that being said, there are two things to remember:

First, you cannot control that.

Second, be diligent in what you can control: your attitude, your skills, your resume, your finances, etc...

If you make it through this round, don’t just sit back and take it easy. Take this as a lesson to make yourself relevant, employable, somewhat financially responsible, and don’t sweat those things out of your control.

@XtYfYcp-oeo When they surprised HP employees on the account with GM offer, many didn't have a chance to reject. Either GM job or HP layoff. Fast forward few years they are now facing GM layoff.

I worked under Randy Mott at hp. This will not be the only round. There will be more. Don't take my word for it, ask anyone that came from hp. We probably made it through 10 or more work force reductions under him. Plus, we had pay freezes and pay cuts. That is why hp was such a c-appy place to work. I told GMers 2 years ago to expect this. Basically, Mott and Mary have imported hp's work culture over to GM. Now that you have a taste of this, it never will leave you. You'll always be wondering when that next round is coming.

I sense your agony, and my heart goes out to you. The prior post here was good advice. Inventory your skills. Update your resume. Do some mock interviews with professional friends. Take control of your career away from GM. Thete are better employers out there. At least better than GM.

I cannot say this enough, start looking for external opportunities as soon as you can. This doesn't mean that you will be targeted this time around, but there will always be another round - and there will always be another round. Life goes by fast and the longer you wait, the lower your job currency drops and the harder it will be to land a job - any job. You need to look out for you now as GM absolutely will not. Good performer, bad performer doesn't matter for the most part. There are people in my old group who didn't have basic Excel skills, WFH all of the time, but were close with management - think they got let go? Nope.

Today I expect another blood bath, as they try to lay off everyone before earnings call tomorrow. Best of luck all if you make it through today I think your chances are high that you stay.
