Blame the UAW

Used to have an actual purpose, now they just protect people who are lazy and insubordinate. The worst thing you can be in the UAW is a hard worker. They drive the cost of Manufacturing in the US way up and don’t even do a good job....

Way back in the day, unions were a good thing. They protected workers. But unions now only protect pension funds. Yes people who make a great salary with no education love their union. But this is exactly what drives jobs overseas. Greed. Both from the company and the union.

It’s not the UAW wages that are the problem, spend some time talking to UAW group leaders and you’ll understand.

One example, the plants have to be equipped with millions of dollars in error proofing equipment because the workers can’t be expected to do their jobs right. And basic error proofing equipment won’t work, because the UAW workers will find ways to turn it off or bypass it. So you need multiple complex error proofing machines at multiple stations.

I’ve spent the last 20 years working on error proofing at UAW plants, I know what I’m talking about.

Facts elude many people. Thank you for your information Xzs0aqr-anp. At the end of the day facts don't care about your feelings. The enemy, has always been the inadequate employees lording over other employees, when it should have always been employee vs corporation only.

Perhaps you have the wrong experience dealing with UAW, because I've seen a very different picture having worked with them on three different positions. No, I'm not blue collar, I design, detail, and engineer, but we all have to start our careers somewhere before reaching those levels. Many just go straight into engineering, without that exposure.

The illusion that the ignorant have, is the impact that an average employee has on a pricing of a vehicle. You see the UAW to make "X" dollars, yet your wage, my wage, and their wage, make up less than 5% of a vehicle price, much closer to 3% than 5%.

You are so concerned with your counterparts wage, that you are completely disillusioned to the reality that EVERYONE should make a livable wage, whether your the janitor, or the chief engineer. You are so disillusioned that you b**ch and complain about your counterparts, that you are incapable to see that no matter the amount that you earn, or they earn, comes close to impacting vehicle price. It only holds everyone down. How about try to elevate everyone into a higher wage bracket instead? You're less than 5% contribution, allows corporate greed to pocket the difference of 95% minus expenses, on your labor.

Before you cast stones, make sure your own house isn't made of glass. Learn something.

The auto mechanic analogy might be the worst I’ve ever heard. Is the auto mechanic taking 3x as long to do the job just to milk the system? Is he high and/or drunk while he’s working on my car? If he messes something up is he going to say it’s my fault because I made it possible for him to mess it up?

High performers in the Union are bullied because they make the majority (low performers) look bad. I have seen that happen probably 20 times. If the UAW could weed out the garbage it would be great, the way it’s set up right now isn’t working and it’s causing all the manufacturing jobs to go to other countries

Salaried has a MUCH higher standard of conduct, the same hourly antics would get you quickly fired, and there is too much of it, resulting in a bad rep tarring all the good folks, resulting in flight of capital and loss of local jobs of both types.

I've worked along side of UAW in many of my positions, and yes there are a small majority that take advantage of the situation, but there are also many, many more that put in the time and work hard. I've seen others out perform their own as well. It's not that unlike the white collar world. You have the mediocre, the above average, and then the exceptional. The same is true in skilled trade, I've worked along side of them as well.

Careful folks. I see a lot of ignorance about the UAW topic in general. The only thing your doing is furthering the divide between employee vs employee, and helping corporations. It should always be employee vs the company.

If you lack the capacity to see, what the world is doing around us is forcing corporations to require a degree, advanced degree, and multiple degree candidates, to take over all positions that earn a respectable income. It's not to say someone without can't do the job, but when everyone has multiple degrees, who's special any longer? Would you like the UAW workers to hold a masters degree so they could if they wanted, compete with your job, and do they really need it?

The analogy I provide is that if your vehicle breaks down, do you need that master degree engineer who knows nothing about fixing a car, or do you want an auto-mechanic without a degree, that charges you $80/$100 per hour? If all non-degreed auto mechanics went on strike, the country would shut down. Should we only pay them $15 per hour?

Where the unions blew it is in not policing their own and maintaining quality, like for instance doctors and lawyers do, and not being more careful not to hobble the golden goose. The reputation is globally legendary. It must be frustrating if you're a good, hard worker, a responsible breadwinner, and so on.

First off the UAW is the only job in the world you can make that much money with ZERO education or work ethic.

Second, I worked the first 15 years of my professional life without a bonus and very little raise.

Third, you can’t expect annual raises when half your employees come into work drunk or high everyday

Fourth, the fact that they complain about only getting $10k is exactly what’s wrong with them. Entitled

The profit sharing bonus union members receive is the ONLY bonus/raise they get. Members have not received raises in years (even piddly 1% cost of living was removed years ago). So while salary folks get raises, bonuses, etc...unions can only count on the profit sharing which most is taken out for taxes.

I work close with the UAW and I’ve seen it all. Sleep on the job, come in drunk or high, refuse to work, they get sent home for a day or 2 and then it’s right back on the job. A lot of great workers who could fill those jobs instead of the clowns that are in them now

May be a part of the problem, who knows?

But other parts are...the mess with Cadillac back and forth, putting people in positions they have no training for ( i.e. engineers into marketing) and relying on the agency, who has their own agenda, for complete guidance, company politics, the list goes on and on. There are a lot of areas AND people to blame.

I'm no union advocate, but health insurance, worker's comp, paid holidays, paid vacations, all part of virtually everyone's "benefit package", were allobtained via collective bargaining, not company "generosity". I'm not saying we should all unionize, just keepin' it real.

Unions are still neccessary. They just need to do a much better job of weeding out the sh--ty people in their talent pools. They should pride themselves on providing the best possible talent so they can demand good wages. The alternative is that everyone makes $12 an hour and we let the government decide what our minimum wage should be. We see how well that's working at Walmart, Amazon etc. The Waltons and Bezos accumulating incredible weath beyond what the normal person can even comprehend, while their employees live on perpetual government assistance. You think GM would be any different if they didn't have to pay a better wage?

The trouble in USA is that many are d--g addicts in Detroit and have min skill set and play games with uaw behind their back... they know they can’t be fired with out large paperwork... it’s better for these companies to build in Brazil or Africa
