There will always be some employees who are superstars and those who are as some say...dead weight. You will never get rid of dead weight totally. In our industry...you will get rid of many superstar employees as you also shed some of the dead weight. Many great employees with tons of potential will avoid this place and/or leave our ranks because of this new initiative. IMHO as big loss to UP.

@1wxi:

And you think you're not a commodity now?

UP is also showing that employers can still treat employees like garbage without "the government" providing healthcare or retirement benefits.

I'm pretty sure corporations like Trump just fine. Not sure why you brought up Hillary Clinton or what you think she has to do with you being dumped all over by your management.

If you hate corporations so much, then don't work for one. Problem solved.

Companies would love all their employees to be contractors. That way, they provide no benefits, have no HR, and can fire them for no reason. They wouldn’t even need to train you. That would s--- for employees. That’s probably why so many corporations wanted Hillary - once you have universal healthcare and government retirement, then companies don’t have to invest anything in their people. Total commodities...

Don’t waste your breath dude. UP doesn’t care about empirical evidence.

CSX is a better ran system than UP. Yes they laid off as we are. The PSR does work. Change is never easy. I'm all union, but at the same time we have dead weight. I see it everyday.

There's nothing in the article that says CSX can't or won't hire another contractor in the future.

One of the benefits of hiring a contractor is greater flexibility. If I don't like your work, I drop you and I get someone else. This is not possible with the labor protectionism that unions advocate for. That appears to be what is happening with CSX. I recommend that you read beyond the article headline.

Your (union) jobs in jeopardy mosty due to the incompetence and aloofness of UP executive and departmental leadership, but the unions also played a role by demanding too much in terms of pay and benefits in return for too little added value for the company in relation to labor costs.

UP management has no ideas of their own.....they're basically copying the CSX....so if CSX doesn't like it then UP won't like it....

It took CSX a few years to figure out that it didn't work and/or was more expensive. How long will it take UP to figure that out?
