Thread regarding Lowe's Cos. layoffs

If it’s so bad, why not quit?

If you work at a Lowe’s, then there are other places to work. McDonalds, Family Dollar, Home Depot. You don’t live in a place with no other options. People act like it’s Guantanamo Bay. If you truly hate your job so much, why don’t you quit? I did. I work somewhere different and I make more money and better benefits. What’s your excuse for still working with Lowes?

Because we love to complain. You must be a kool aid drunk manager or supervisor. That's
the mentality they've adopted now. If you're not happy, you can always resign. Management
by fear and intimidation. We remember better times. That's the sad part.

Maybe it's because people have invested years in this place and worked their way into higher paying positions than they would typically find in this field of work? Or because not all that long ago this company wasn't the sinking ship that it is now. So the real question is why are you on the internet when you're supposed to be making french fries?

your momma must be so proud of you. real winners mindset. only problem is ive met very few people that can turn on and off the hard work ethic. they always have some reason why they no longer need to try hard. any hard worker i know gives it their all while looking for a new and better opportunity. and yeah youll be hurting the other hourly wage slaves in your store. in this retail environment where stores were places too close to other stores the new corporate mindset is to slowly consolidate some of those stores that are stepping on the sales of other stores. the under-performer will be eliminated. tends to be a big theme in articles about retail. my own store is near other lowes stores and its discussed from time to time. unfortunately to make sure your store continues to exist you must please the overlords you hate. as always....until you actually have a new job in hand.

Actually in my store at least I'm not trying to get back at executives, it's the store.... I'm not hurting any lower employees. We're all still getting paid by the hour and there aren't enough of us for them to fire everyone. Change starts at the top, the day I can hope for a raise again I'll give a c-ap about my performance. I'm capped and plan on leaving so I'm not concerned about looking good to move up so I finally have the freedom to goof off all day.

It’s very easy for someone to say “Why not quit?” When they aren’t in your circumstances.

First, some people who have been employed at Lowe’s for a long time, it was once a decent place to work. Then the changes came. But if you’ve worked for Lowe’s for years and built up pay, benefits, vacation time, etc, it’s not so easy to just walk away. Even if you want to do it.

Secondly, if you jump ship to a new retailer after years at Lowe’s, you wind up at the bottom, working your way up again. The company knows this, believe me. And there are places in this country that literally have no other jobs than retail. There’s no other option other than to work for a place like Lowe’s. The company knows this too.

And why should you have to quit? Is it too much to ask that you be treated like a human being and paid a decent wage? Is treating your associates like people instead of cattle too much to ask? You act like the complaints on sites like this are just the idle whining of losers. I’ve read a lot of the points made on this site and while some are pointless, some are legitimate criticisms and complaints. We shouldn’t have to jump ship to another employer if this company would simply live up to its promises and policies. Be the company you say you are Lowe’s. Then sites like this wouldn’t exist!

B of A was starting tellers at $20. Would it be better to be a part time teller or part time cashier at Lowe’s?

so you plan on screwing over people that havent done anything to you in an attempt to get back at the isolated executives that wont feel any of the pain you inflict on your store. good move. when you seek to act just as those you hate in an attempt to harm those you hate...you become them. maybe be the change. all your mindset ever shows is the difference between "us and them" is that you dont have their power and would operate just like them if given the chance. which, ironically, in their minds, justifies how they treat us.

Do you want the truth? I plan on leaving but until I do I want to cost them every single penny humanly possible. Wasted supplies, wasted time, damaged product, discouraging customers from buying, not pushing add ons...... To my last moment here I want to help them throw away money with the same ease they so people.

The McDonald’s near me pays better and offers a $1,500 college scholarship. Best employment for teens not so for an adult with rent and bills to pay.

Pay is better than Lowe’s.

I bled blue and worked for Lowe’s for over 20 yrs. I was one of the old dept mgrs that ended up leaving voluntarily back in 2017. I was making over $45,000.00/yr as a career dept mgr. When they did away with my position, I knew it was time for me to leave. I now work for a small business in the same industry with a mon-Fri work schedule with no nights and I love it. No visits from district/regional/area staff to get ready for, no problem getting time off for personal or family reasons, no managers with ice water in their veins to worry about satisfying or dealing with, no more task checklists, no more layoffs or threats of layoffs, no more being managed through fear and intimidation, and best of all no more having to watch absolutely worthless, lazy employees be held up and treated as examples for the rest of us. Financially overall I benefited from my time at the company but I realized in early 2017 that my days were numbered and that this was no longer a company that I wanted to work for. So I made plans to leave and did just that.

When I was there I stayed because it was a job that paid me 55K a year and I worked 40 hours plus matching 401K. benefits were c-ap but better then paying on my own. I was glad to be laid off though. I no longer get upset stomachs or work nights/weekends. In the end it was the best thing for my life. Even with making less money.

When I leave Lowe’s (actively looking), it will not be for another lousy retail job. It may take me 3 months or 3 years, but I’ll remain at this sinking ship until I find something better (non retail).

In my neck of the woods, Lowes is the distribution center for the west coast. High turnover rate but good pay for the area. Lowes is not just the stores but also warehouse, delivery and trucking. The big plus is that Lowes is willing to hire people fresh out of high school with no prior job experience and train them. After just 3 months they now have skills they can use else where. The OP thinks that Lowes workers are unskilled and should apply at entry level jobs at Mickey Dees if they decide to leave.

As for quitting and finding other work, some places will not hire people that have working skills and only want people at the entry level. If there are other warehouses that are hiring, they do in fact steal Lowes warehouse employees by offering more pay.

As a job, Lowes serves its purpose as a stepping stone to better things.

Why do you list all the lousy places to work? Is that where you would go next or came from? The reality is many Lowe’s employees are underemployed. When they apply at other places weather it’s as a plumbers or electrical apprentice in the union, or working at a shipping company like UPS, I even know people that went to Amazon and said it is better. Former employees work in tech, business, outside and inside sales. I was constantly recruited while working at Lowe’s. I didn’t intend to leave. But one day I woke up saw it wasn’t going to get better and quit. Now I make double on less hours with no weekends.
