Block Scheduling...What Has Been Your Club's Reaction Thus Far?

Block Scheduling has been in place long enough now for us to be able come up with a general consensus of how it has affected things thus far. I'm interested in hearing what is happening at other clubs out there.

My club has had a very difficult time transitioning over to it. A lot of shortages in the run all over the place, people unable to manage time efficiently, members feeling inconvenienced and dissatisfied, managers and leads frustrated, the club looking generally very bad compared to how it did before the changes took place, people leaving and not being replaced, incoming freight accumulating both on the dock and still in the trailers, and just general inability to handle everything smoothly. Some clubs in the market have done a little better than we have and some worse.
So what's been the story at your club so far? How have members reacted? Do you see any positives versus the previous system? Do you wish it would go back to the way it was done before?

I’ve yet to see a positive attitude stock a single pallet. That line is so overused and unrealistic at the current state of affairs.

The club is a mess, for sure. We are heavy on Club Pickup, so all day long, most floor associates are pulling orders non-stop. There is no one to fold clothes, or take care of photo or t-b-cco... plus we are still having to run constantly for the registers or be greeters/exit door associates. The new HR program is a joke... they keep sending us 16 year olds or literally... and I do not joke here... people with no teeth! They are "hiring" these people for the floor, WTH???!!! So sad...

I feel the blocked schedule is ok. I have noticed that more people has called in or not showed up. Then you have you part time people quite as well. I still don’t see the difference in the blocked schedule because I am a part time person and I hate being a filler when people don’t show.

Worst idea yet. I know Costco never used a night crew and just had people come in at 3am and work till 11am but they don't open till 10 every day. Much easier to get it done when you're bringing in an army of ppl every morning to stock the store and don't have to worry about opening at 7. Costco also has a policy of no forklifts out on the floor ever during business hours. How does Costco do it for years and years and years and never ever ever have any problems? They know what the f they're doing that's why. They really do employ ppl and those ppl care because they get paid. I've tried to get into Costco for years and they won't hire me because I've worked at Sam's and they want nothing to do with ppl who worked at Sam's. This whole thing with us going to block schedules is a disaster and will stay a disaster because ppl working in Bentonville who come up with these ideas, that's their job, to find ways to get rid of employees and cut jobs to put more money into the pockets of the execs and investors. We don't matter and they don't want us. None of them ever worked in the stores but they don't care. They just have to come up with ways to cut jobs. Well with this bad idea they've come up with the best way yet to lose business too. They're gonna run all these stores into the ground and then blame it on us because they put us in an impossible situation and we can't keep up. Good job Bentonville. Real smart. Try to be more like Costco and all you do is become less and less like Costco. Our club is in the toilet and I've got friends at other clubs and they all say the same thing. Just another really bad idea by a really greedy company.

Receiving was a lot easier on nights but I’m getting lots of overtime with this new block scheduling. 21 hours overtime on this coming paycheck and the manager already asked me to work a extra day this week. I’m guessing close to Christmas I will be 7 days a week just to keep up. Don’t see how this was a good idea for the company but I’m making a k–ling of of there bad ideas lol.

Our club is a hot mess. Not stocked. Pallets everywhere, looks messy. Members complain because we are running freight to the steel while we are OPEN. Any late trucks that come they want the docks clear so we run it out to the floor with spotters and disrupt the members shopping experience. VERY unproductive, a waste of a two spotters and a driver.

It's been a mess. Store looks horrible. Pallets are everywhere. Shelves are empty. Lost so many employees we got a temp service in here and they just walk around for however many hours a day they're scheduled. No one wants to be in charge of them because they're only here for 90 days. Which is funny since most new hires dont make it that long anymore. We have members calling with complaints daily. Long lines, miserable associates, clueless management and shrinking memberships.

Our club is bad. One might think it is getting better but we really are just accepting chaos. No two managers have the same expectations. We can't get mixed freight done because as soon as 7 comes by golly there are projects to do. Then the next day the next manager wonders why mixed freight and new items are not done. We have one manager who drops so much freight it is simply discouraging to walk in and see it all. Everyone needs to learn everything but how can you when you are running like a chicken with its head cut off. Bad bad bad. No end in sight nor ever will be.

We started out rough, the last few weeks is better than it was before. We ever issues but you just got to work through everything. If you do it with a negative attitude things will never change, you need to stay positive and work with everybody to make it work.

One thing I always admire about Sam’s was they work with everyone to accommodate associates with children in school, associates attending school or associates with second jobs Not true anymore. The cross training is not work since you are doing everyone’s job ,not every been train , looking stupid and now you can’t do your job who no one else does. Never enough associates for the memberships desk the put a associates there that has never been trained. Not the associates fault that the don’t know. Really this is bad.

It has been a Disaster in our club! Members trying to shop with pallets dropped in the middle of the floor and shelves not staying stocked. We are down to 2 cart guys and 2 part time maintenance guys. Can’t find good people to work in any of the open positions. Job well done Home Office way to lose good employees and drive members out of the clubs!
