Thread regarding Sam's Club layoffs

Let's have an honest discussion: Hours of Business

How important is the 7AM opening time to your specific club? What would happen if the opening time at all clubs was changed to 9AM or even 10AM, all week long? How much would that help or hurt your club? Who would it impact positively or negatively?

I ask this because having those extra two or three hours every day would most certainly alleviate many of the stocking and freight movement issues that block scheduling and the backroom alterations are causing.

These are just thoughts. I'm not trying to do anything other than have a civil and honest discussion. I can also foresee the company going in this direction in the near future so I'm curious what others have to say about it.

It’s completely unrealistic to be ready at 7am. Product everywhere, sign changes not finished. Club pickup is only growing. There’s no way to be ready at 7am every day. If the doors opened at 10am, there would be a tremendous amount of progress.

If they want the clubs properly stocked and zoned they should do only club pickup orders until 9 am. Outside of Saturday it’s waste of payroll to have cashiers and COS at this time.

If we have to stock 4hrs (which some are doing now) then work face to face with customers, they're going to have to install showers. :)

For as much as Sams Club wants to be like Costco, do what they do. Open at 10 every day. The 4am team would have plenty of time then to get clubs ready. Club pick-up from 7-10 am, pick up at the front, no need for members to be on the floor until 10. Close clubs on holidays like Costco. Reinstate paid holidays but close on them days to reward partners for all their hard work. Copy Costco, then, with Scan N Go and Club Pick Up, we should have the advantage especially since our membership is cheaper. I am in my 29th year with Sams, when I first started, we didnt have a night crew, we opened at 10am Mon-Wed-Fri, 12 noon Tues and Thur.

9 would be fine.
8 would be great.
7 is not heaven.

I wish they would change opening hours to 8 A.M. Like someone said the whole state of Florida is doing. There isn't enough business at 7 A.M. That would give those front end associates more time to help stock and straighten floor. Especially the ones who like to call out all the time on Sunday that are schedule in at 6 A.M. who don't want to stock. Not sure how they keep a job calling out all the time there is no way they have that much PPTO to cover all the time. Something rotten in Demark as they say.

Their idea to save money was to close down at least 4 hours per day. We will see what happens next

I would to see them test this idea. They could bring in the morning crew around 6 and that would give them 4 hours to stock and narrow the gap between morning and evening crews. Right now in my club there is an two and half hour gap with almost zero floor coverage.

CPU is very busy between 7 and 10 in our club with a lot of members who pay cash and who also pick up additional merchandise. Our area has a ton of Amish who also come in early.

I don't think only I would be that big a deal for us. The biggest thing would be T-b-cco Members and Restaurant owners and there's only a handful of those at 7am. I think that would be a good idea if CPU was still available at 7am - The few T-b-cco and Restaurants could just switch over to CPU; they would be very unhappy about that because those that come in that early want to handpick their own stuff but it's not about pleasing the Member is it, it's about numbers and from a numbers perspective, staying closed till 10 during the weekdays would not be that big a deal.
Another thing to mention, though is Costco, a good amount of our business members complain about different things and finish up by saying that the only reason they're still with Sam's is because we open so early or else they'd just go there full time.

Home office is not bright enough to figure out this isn’t working very well. My club uses lifts on the floor after we’re open with no spotters till there done.

Maybe nine would work, if Club Pick UP was still available at 7am for curbside pickup.

Overnight shifts worked best, but so what, it's gone. The concept of Merchandising is a joke, they're not enough of them and therefore they can't get the jobs done. The isles are filled with pallets, all day, every day. Yesterday, there were kids climbing/walking across the tops of pallets of candy that were in the isle. It's ridiculous. Women sitting their purses on tops the pallets to dig in, looking for who-knows-what, like the pallet was a table. And one girl, I kid you not, was changing a diaper on top of a pallet in the baby isle.
