Considering how understaffed we usually are, among other things?

I'm a long time Macy's shopper and former employee. In my region, most of the Macy's employees are cranky and difficult even during a simple transaction. The flip side is wandering around the store looking for a register that's open.
Get mad but it's my experience at 4 local Macy's. One is ok but not great. 2 are unshoppable and one is .1 mile from my job so I make it work.
I'm in the demographic that is most likely to be a loyal customer.
The customers are there......but only to return their online purchases..
What customers?
The shop lifters are very happy! No LP in my store after 8pm and the thieves know it!
I think they need to worry more about how happy their employees are!
Just look at the twitter replies to Macy's INC. They're almost completely BAD. No wonder the place is failing.
They really dont care...all they care is if they can use a coupon..
Retail is doing terrible ergo moral is going to be bad. This is one of several stories

There are not many loyal customers to Macy's or any retailer for that matter. Amazon probably has more loyalty because they deliver and usually at a lower price. Macy's customers are not happy, that is why business is declining. Macy's is old school to today's shopping standards. It will cost too much to revamp the tired Macy's brand. They may as well close all smaller stores and keep the growth doors. These in time will fizzle out as well.
