Hello - I do not work for IBM but I am gathering info on different types of Severance Packages large companies offer nowadays. If someone feels comfortable with sharing this info, please reply to this thread. Thanks!

IBM's April 4th/5th 2023 RA:

  1. 30 days notice to find a job within IBM
  2. 3 months severance
  3. 1 year of Cobra subsidized medical insurance (varies depending upon length of service 3, 6. or 12 months for 5 years25 years )

Companies don't treat people this way when they're doing well. The people running this place are panicking. Get out and let them keep there severance package if you can find a new job.

Same thing as others:
90 Days notice - no other team will pick you up since you will be blacklisted internally.

If you leave before the 90 days are up, you are voluntarily resigning and basically allowing IBM to claim one less layoff for legal and reporting purposes. You also forfeit any state unemployment benefits when you leave "voluntarily", which saves IBM money, too.

30 days severance - regardless of whether you were there 1 year or 30 years.

Supposedly $2500 "retraining" credit in the year after you leave - which IBM goes out of their way to say NOTHING about. You have to find it yourself and there are onerous requirements on your part to claim any part of it. Never known anyone whose been able to use that.

Scare tactics about your vacation usage and payout - as has been noted.

yeah, IBM get rid of junk and overpay. Most IBM do not dereve the job. there are over pay on them skillset. most of them can not get a job afer IBM let go. Therefore they stay IBM as long as they can. when they let go they complaint. they are can not get the same job and same salary they get. the true is the Knowledge and skill they have no one will hire them. They stay IBM so long and did not learn any new technology. IBM is old tech

The packet I was given about my RA back in June clearly stated that unused vacation days will be compensated. This maybe different based on your location as laws vary by state. I don’t know for sure. I can tell you that I did not use any vacation this year and received the compensation for all accrued days shortly before my last day. Even if I had used some days I’m sure my manager would have looked the other way if I claimed I didn’t, but I guess that depends on the manager.

Management will tell you that you must use all vacation, this is an outright lie. I was told this and started to use my days until a very good ex manager told me to push the issue which I did. My manager reversed what she told me and I got paid. If you are RA’ed , you are on your own. Best of luck, be a voice and stick up to this horrible company.

In the UK, the packages became smaller each year until they reached the minimum payable by law. So for the last few years IBM has paid the statutory minimum https://www.gov.uk/redundant-your-rights/redundancy-pay

I wouldn't be surprised if IBM now pays the
legal minimum in whichever country is having the redundancy.

I'm not really sure the UK government had huge companies with 80 billion dollars in revenue in mind when they brought these minimums in. So proud.

I was laid off a year ago March after 30+ years of service. Was given two weeks notice and 30 days severance. Less than one day severance for each year of service. Not kidding.

Current approach is 90 days working notice, followed by 30 days severance. If you leave early, you are considered to have resigned voluntarily and dont get the severance.
