@5njq,
No raises? That is nothing but a BS excuse. It sounds like your career/upward mobility have been stymied by a d—beat manager that is clearly taking advantage of you. Get off that team now!

@2wwm

When the second tier manager told me, my first reaction was to update my resume. I figure that praise without a raise is the Black Spot of management communication...

@2phc,

Top performer told by two tiers of management? lol oh man you made me spit out my coffee!
That's almost as funny as the IBM badge and patent gang. (more like apple dumpling gang)

A promotion is the potential for more money later, assuming you can meet the higher demands and you are not RA'd. I would rather have the actual increase now.

8K increase to move from band 9 to 10 is really not worth it... additionally, if you are in Lab Services for example, being a band 10 will require IBM to charge a lot more for your services... band 9 rates are already outrageously high, band 10 rates are usually a no go with customers... so good luck staying busy and making your utilization numbers!

Band 9 to 10 is about an $8k bump, if your manager goes to bat.

Leaving after 10 years is about a $30k bump (on top of the 8). It was an easy choice.

Welp, I'm a consistent top performer who has been told by two tiers of mgmt that the business can't afford to lose me. And I'm not even at the 50% level for my band.

So I'd opt for more money.

Neither. Just a new job outside of IBM. Hopefully soon.

It depends on what you do and where you live. There are 2 types of salary increases: market based and performance based and you can guess how each increase is applied. Though if you look at the range of salaries for each band there's a lot of overlap from band to band so that's not really the best way for salary increases, it's consistently getting 2+ and 1 so you get the top of the performance bonus range. This should also result in band increases but you have to be open about your desire to reach that next band level.

Band level increases don't come with tenure. I know people that have been band 7 for the last 12 years. The reason is that your band has more to do with the scope of your influence and impact than your time here. If you want to coast at a 2 performance level you can ride that out in your band until you retire or there's an RA. If you want to get to that next band level, go ask a band 7 what they do and how they do it. Look up the description of that band level for your role and talk to your manager about what you can do to start taking on that level of responsibility. It's true that you have to be doing the work of the band for a little while before you get that advancement.

But it's also important to bear in mind that IBM tends to favor A types up the ranks. Your best bet is to have an intrinsic motivation to do the work that helps the customer and IBM succeed. If money or title is your only motivation, you'll flame out. Representing the core values of IBM is what gets you noticed and being a solid contributor is what gets you advanced.

FWIW, I've been here for 13 years. I started as a band 6 and reached band 9 in my 12th year so it has been about a 3 year cycle on advancement. But I'm more or less compelled to do interesting things. Money has never really interested me as the motivation but it has come over time due to my performance.

Hope this helps.

If you've reached the top of you current band's payscale, then you would want a band increase. A band increase always brings more money - so you get both!

Band increase is bigger than the paltry raises over the past 7 years. My entire team has moved on and is better paid and happier. IBM is the walking dead.

The only reason to want a band increase is for better pay. This is a no brainer.
